Seriously, since most Japanese auto manufacture use "just in time" methods, there is no stockpile of parts to build from and many of the small plants that made assemblies for the big manufacturers are damaged/gone, it may be a while until manufacturing picks up again.

Even many plants that are not damaged do not have power or transportation routes available to them, and therefore are out of business for now.

The main shipping port for Scion xB2 and xD was Sendai, and that port facility no longer exists.

If a Scion xB or xD is already here or in transit, it will be available for sale, but I expect the dealer stock to dry up before new ones are made and shipped, even at the current slow sales rate...

It is one gigantic tragic catastrophe. I believe the new 3rd gen Vitz (Yaris) comes out of that plant too. The bigger impact, is that even for the USDM market, many parts and supplies are still sourced from Japan. . . there could and very well will be a global slowdown and supply interruptions to all Toyota plants, dealers, and parts retailers worldwide. There are always alternate suppliers (ie, many parts produced in Japan are also produced in Thailand, e.g. oil filters and the like).

^ Man, the temptation is really high to comment on that (most of you know how I feel about the current generation of products). . . but out of respect for the INSANE number of people suffering out there, I will keep my mouth (fingers/keyboard???) shut. I hope everything returns to normal soon, for the sake of the factories, jobs, Toyota, the world economy, and most importantly the living breathing human-beings that are suffering out there. Not the time or place for criticism of Scion models and philosophy.

It's so bad out there. . . just imagine what will happen WHEN (not if, but when) this happens in a less prepared region of the world.

Here are some options:

* Text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 on behalf of the American Red Cross.

* Text TSUNAMI to 50555 to donate $10 on behalf of Convoy of Hope, Inc.

* Text WAVE to 50555 to donate $10 on behalf of the World Relief Corp. of National Association of Evangelicals.

* Text JAPAN or QUAKE to 80888 to donate $10 on behalf of The Salvation Army.

There are also many other ways to help.

Apple inc, is making donations easy with its iTunes software. iTunes is the place where iOS-powered devices and Mac owners buy apps and music. The minimum donation allowed is $5, while $200 is the maximum. Apparently, you can repeat donating. You can start donating via iTunes by clicking this link. According to Apple, all donations will go to American Red Cross.

Current events... this appears to be getting worse.
Wrong topic? I suppose this will further delay the iQ as well.

Hang in their Japan.. thoughts and prayers.

There will likely be much hardship and many deaths because of this for months and years to come.

Watching NHK on one of my screens right now, and it is snowing hard in some areas there, with temps right around freezing AND THESE PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE food, drinking water, heating, adequate shelter, adequate clothing, electricity, etc.

Not only do many people there not have food, heat, and water, there is no way to get it to them.

More will die. It is inevitable. It is also very sad.

The news release I got from Toyota yesterday is they will be making a short run at 50% capacity the last two weeks of this month, but it appears after that they will have run out of some parts and some of the makers of those parts can no longer make them... The xB2 / xD plant will start up April 11.

April 28 through May 9 is Toyota's annual "spring break", and they will reassess what they can do when they return from that.

Once they get their supply chain running again - either by the other manufacturers rebuilding or moving to new suppliers - they hope to be back in permanent production.

You have to remember, too, that there were probably a fair number of Scions that had already been shipped, so there is not yet any real interruption in the supply here. (I have no idea how many, if any, were destroyed before being shipped.)

(Speaking of shipping, Sendai was the shipping port for the xB2 and xD, so they will probably have to be transported to another port to be shipped until the port at Sendai can be rebuilt.)

HTH
