Default Need drag racing advice

OK here is the deal, took my car to the track for the first time and did not run anything like I hoped. Im boosted running the turbonetics kit. Problem was wheel spin like crazy. Seemed no matter what I tried I would spin until 3rd. If I launched low I would bog real bad, and anything higher I would just rip the tires. Hooked up somewhat my last pass but smoked the clutch while boostin in 3rd. So I plan on upgrading the clutch and tires now. What do the fellow drag racers recommend for techneic, tires, and clutch? Got the drag racing bug now and plan on goin back real soon. I only got to run 3 times before my clutch went and I was only running the quarter at 15.5, but at over 100mph so I know I'm pulling at the end.

front tires down to 15 psi or so, but the key is a good sticky and wide tire; and slipping the clutch at launch. FWD is tough at the drag strip.

^+1 on what he said above. I run the BFGoodrich 225/45/17 drag radials for my new setup. Slipping the clutch out the gate is important cause if you just dump it you'll just cook the tires in 1st & 2nd on a street tire.

A friend of mine has a similar setup to the TT kit I put on my car last year, only difference is his car is 5 speed. He was running 12 pounds of boost and when I drove his car I was running 13.20's all day long. The first 60 feet is the most critical when it comes to E/T's....if you can get the car to kind of hook up so that your just spinning slightly in 2nd & sticking 3rd.....you'll see those times dip down.

Having a LSD is crucial in my opinion for drag racing. One tire fires and not launching straight will hurt E/T's for sure. Especially once you start putting down some nice power, a LSD is a must.

My buddy who's tC I drove has the HD pressure plate and the 6 puck and the clutch pedal didn't feel bad at all.

Basically it depends on how much power your putting down as to what clutch would be best for you.

If you're in the 275/300 range then the ACT HD pressure plate and the street disc clutch should be just fine for your application.

The ACT clutch will probably get the job done but IMHO if you want the best around, then you've got to go with SPEC, they run the tightest tolerances and are of higher quality, significantly lower rates of failure under load....check these out over at NST:

Once again though, the most important thing you need to worry about is getting an LSD. Guys who are naturally aspirated are running 15's pretty easy, some much quicker than that with just an LSD...here is the best one ive seen (over at Dezod), not sure if you can come across it any cheaper elsewhere:

Thanks for all the tips guys. An LSD is not really an option for me at this point. Trying to build up this car and my turbo eclipse is draining my wallet fast. Anyone had any luck with drag radials? Also when I have the trans out would it be worth it to get an aluminum flywheel? I use no lift shifting at the track so rpm dipping down between shifts wont be a problem.

Definitely understand that, finishing up the last odds and ends for my build also. I've had good experiences with drag radials....largely because the track that I regularly attend is prep'd very well and EXTREMELY sticky. You'll still spin in 1st gear but from my experience with drag radials you'll begin to grip midway through 2nd gear. IMO might as well install a lightweight flywheel while the tranny is off but I would go with the heavier of the lightest flywheels (11.5 lb). Just my 2 cents.

Something else to take note of is that my old setup was only making 244 whp @ 6psi and my buddies tC was making 320 whp @ 12psi so that's not making crazy horsepower at all. If I had to do it all over again I just would've purchased slicks to be honest. I've seen video of brett516tC 400+ hp tC dead hook 2nd at the track so IMO if you have the option of drag radial or slick....definitely go with the slick.

if you're taking the trans out you should get the OBX LSD. better than nothing!

Thanks for the replies but I'm not opening the trans at this point. So no LSD as of now. I have two project cars and need to spend my money wisely as i'm not rich. Looking like a good clutch, light weight flywheel, and slicks are in order for this tc. If I can get into the 13's I will be happy. My car did very well on the streets, but now I'm older and take it to the track. Just didn't realize how hard it is to get a fwd with power down the track. Live and learn I guess. Still grin at the guys who say they would run a fast time at the track haven never tried.

High hp fwd car + open diff = disappointing drag times.

Slicks will definitely help, but an lsd will give you major improvements.

Also, if you are already having traction issues, why would you put in a lightweight flywheel?

If you are going to be installing a new clutch, it is the perfect time to install an lsd.

Have you considered using a phantom grip? Much cheaper than a quaife/etc, with nearly the same benefits if you are on a budget.
