Question Wrecked my xB, transmission issues

In January I wrecked my xB....rear-ended an SUV.

Front clip is gone. Suspension is fine. I had to replace the intake manifold, but it runs great. I replaced all the motor mounts (right was broken rear bent).

Bottom line is, I am repairing it. Body and paint are no problems, but the transmission is. Anything beyond changing the fluid and filter is a little past me. Give me a book and guy to talk to and I will dig in, but I need guidance.

Right now, if I start the car and put it in gear, it hits hard and dies. When it is in park, I can lift the front and rotate both tires.... like it is in Neutral!.

Anyone have any clues?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do not want to salvage it, but don't have the money to take it to a shop for repairs.
