Default Scion xB Windshield

Hello, this is my first post.

I am in the market for an xB and have been looking for one.

While reading about the first gen xBs I noticed that lots of people have had to replace their windshields.

One of the cars I test-drove had a windshield leak, a 2006 with over 140k miles.

Is the windshield issue that common? Will I have to get ready replacing windshields if/when I get an xB?

What are your suggestions to a prospective owner?

Is it safe to say that windshield issue is not common or owners do not want to advertise a negative or none in 75 people who read the post have an xB or what?

Hey Blumonster,

WELCOME!

I have had my 2006 xB for 5 years now and have not had any issue with the windshield. Of course, I have some chips and it looks like it's been through multiple sandstorms with 175K miles. It seems like these forums are not as active as they once were, so that would account for the no replies.

Good luck finding an xB out there - they are available. I saw one at my local Toyota dealer in Canton, GA that came in on a trade. Looked like it was modded with springs etc. Only 75k miles but they are asking $11,998 for it! Waaaaay too much IMHO. Have also seen some on CL in Atlanta for around $5000 with decent miles and have not been molested - that's the kind I would look for then do your own thing.

I plan on keeping mine for as long as it runs. Still get 35-37 mpg mixed driving. Just did the endlink bushing mod and boy what a difference! I love mine - it is everything I knew it would be.

Good luck!

Default xB Windshield

Hey Blumonster,

I've had my 06 xB since Oct 2005. I've only put around 45,000 miles on it but so far I've only got 1 or 2 very small chips in my windshield. I only see them when I clean my windshield, never while driving. I've had no leaks or any other problems.

I highly recommend the xB1 to anyone who's interested. One of it's best features is the windshield and the fact that you ride high in this car and you have a lot of window to look outside. I really like the 2nd gen xB as well but it doesn't ride as high, gets lousy gas mileage, it has a weak automatic transmission but really you can't lose with either version.

I just can't get rid of my xB1, in the past I always loved practical hatchbacks like the 88 Civic and Accord hatchback but the xB1 takes it to a whole nother' level. Scion sold 40,000 - 60,000 of these baby's a year but they weren't making any money off of them, it was just an introductory car for their new brand. Otherwise, you'd see millions of xB1's all over the place.

Good luck on your decision and welcome to the board!

When I got my 2005 xB a few months ago, it already had chips in the windshield. Phoenix had a good rain shortly after I got it and noticed water spots on the center of the inside of the windshield. That right there explained why my "door ajar" light doesn't completely turn off. Not sure if it was installed incorrectly or a defect in the car.

We have a 2004 xB since new and we have had to replace the windshield twice. In between the replacements we had to have various star chips filled to keep the windshield from cracking. We replace the windshield when the 3rd star chip occurs. I currently have 1 start chip in the windshield so it's just a matter of time.

I have a 2005 with 242,000 miles on it and had to replace my windshield once. That had a stone chip that decided to become a crack. Not bad consider the amount of salt they dump on the roads around here and the dump trucks i encounter on the roads. I have had a lot of rocks hit mine and sounded really loud with no damage being done.

Don't let the windshield issue discourage you from getting an xB. It's a great car.

I have a 2006 xB RS 3.0 that I bought new. Never had any more chips on the windshield than any other car I've owned. About 4 years ago though it got a long horizontal crack. My fault - We had a snowfall, followed by a warm day, and I didn't brush off the snow. The bottom part of the windshield was covered with snow, while the top half got all the warm sunshine. Expansion crack. A local windshield glass company replaced it in my driveway in about an hour. They had to come back out 2x as I heard a whistling noise while driving afterwards (I'd imagine if it was raining there would've been a leak). They ended up replacing the entire window seal with a higher-end seal (not just the seal kit that comes with replacement windshields). That did the trick. Never had a single leak.

2006.5, bought new in March 2007, 88k miles. Have had 3 windshields put in, all paid for by insurance, with no deductible. AZ is a glass coverage state, if you opt in and have comp. coverage.
The first two used the stock style seal with a terrible fit. The 3rd used a seal that covers the frame better to stop wind noise and water intrusion.
