I am in no way an expert on performance mods, so please dont flame. I recently rode with a friend who installed something that made his car release a "whoosh" of air when he shifted. What would this be? Any details would be appreciated.

I think its just a blow off valve, i could be wrong

2)fake sound generating a blow off valve

and yes, an intake will make that "whoosh" sound. i have huge k&n open air intakes in my celica and mr2, with the mr2, since there is so much openness (lid vents, side vents) it makes a loud "whoosh" sound from the throttle body shutting.

Depends how big a whoosh sound you mean . I was coming back from Ft myers this weekend and had my friend drive my tc all the way back, when he shifted I heard a slight whoosh sound that I guess is the throttle plate closing, though I could hardly hear it from the driver side (maybe I didnt pay attention before).

The biggest whoosh maker is a blow off valve. This releases the pressure when the throttle plate is closed and the turbo is still spooling, once you shifter the plate opens up (with your gas pedal), the BOV closes and the air is once again fed into the intake manifold.

If he is venting his BOV it will sound real loud, I had mine venting for a while buy my car ran like ___ (Eclipse GST) this is because it runs on a MAF type intake.

I could go on and on cause Im bored at work but Ill leave it at that.

 

prolly just a CAI. when i put my injen on, i noticed a whoosh sound. if the car was fast as ____ then it was prolly a turbo blow off valve.

 

what kind of car does he drive?

 

I believe it is turbo charged, and it is a Volkswagen GTI 20th Annivesary.
