Default Cracked Windshield Questions

I know it's been publicised a million times, but I was unable to find anything to answer my question in the search feature...

I faintly remember a TSB or some kind of replacement plan for the xB windshields being done by dealerships due to them cracking/breaking/shattering et-all...Is this TSB still in effect??? If so, does anyone have the info on it, or know where I can find it???

My xB became on of the thousands with a cracked windshield today thanks to the 24 Freeway in Oakland...

Last but not least...How much does a Scion windshield cost to replace anyway???

Thanks!!!

You may be thinking of the tC moonroof recall. I don't believe there's anything on xB windshields, although some people certainly think there ought to be.

no.. no recall for xB windscreen.

though I wish they would replace mine. Besides the one crack, there must be a thousand small pits. I've never seen pitting on windscreens before.

Yeah my windshield has millions of small sand grain sized pits in it. Driving into the sun makes it impossible to see through them all. Now my windhshield has a 2.5 foot crack in it from a rock kicked by a truck. So now I have a good excuse to replace it. Hopefully with something better.

I have a mobile company coming out tomorrow afternoon to do a windshield replacement...Has anyone ever had their windshields replaced yet??? If so, what's all involved??? I'm just concered about glue residue spilling out onto the A Pillars or the wiper area just behind the hood...Is a windshield replacement a tough thing for someone to do??? Forgive my naivety, I've never had to replace one before :D

If it's a reputable company (not Jo-Bob's glass 'n' stuff) you should not be able to tell they ever touched your car, besides the fact that your glass is new.

Don't accept anything less - I know I won't when I get my rock-cracked windshield replaced in the spring.

I plan to inspect closely after the swap to make sure there are no imperfections, and as soon as they say it's ok (assuming the sealant has a cure time) I'm bringing it to the power-wash to test their work further. If it leaks, it's going back.

I've decided to go through Triumph Auto Glass...They came recommended to me by another Scio owner here that I work with who had his xB windshield replaced...The tech came out today to inspect the car and informed me that it's a seamless transition, and yes I wouldn't be able to notice anything being different other than my glass being brand new...I called in for a repair not a replacement the other day so they're coming back to replace it on Monday afternoon...They told me the whole thing takes about an hour to complete and then another hour to completely cure and dry...You better believe I'm heading down to the pressure wash after it cures ;)

Unless the technology has changed drastically in the last year you need to give it about 24 hours to cure. The one I had done about a year ago involved putting a bead of sealant/adhesive around the frame and then pressing the windshield into the frame. The tech said to leavea door window cracked just so slightly if the car was sitting out in the hot sun for the rest of the day. He had seen the pressure in the car rise from the heat enough to force the newly installed winshield out slightly and break the bond of the adhesive. He also said not to spray water directly around the seam for the same time period or it could force the adhesive to move and cause a leak. I do not remember the name of the company but they have done 3 of them now over the last 6 years or so and they are a large company, not a fly by night outfit.

24 hours seems reasonable. Good tip about leaving the window cracked a bit in the warmer weather/direct sunlight.

My windshield is cracked-cracked by a truck....great....It started out as a chip that I got repaired and once the cold air hit it-it started to spread ...the sheild is a problem.

Default XB Windshield Replacement Cost

Here is some data to help determine the average cost of replacing an Xb windshield. I've replaced 2 in the last year here in the bay area (only thing worse than the flying rocks on 24 is the uneven payment - Get the koni's, it really helps!). A2Z Autoglass replaced it for $295. After finding out that the window leaked badly after a rain, I tried calling them, but the phone just rang. Not wanting to mess around with a small shop, I called a few others and went with All Star Glass for $311. That was about 3 mo ago. I just returned from the car wash and found a nice leak down the center of the windshield. I'll drop by the shop tomorrow.

Back in February of 2005, when I'd put less than 500 miles on the box, someone tossed 4 large chunks of concrete at the front of my xB. Part of the damage was the windshield.

The first replacement glass (Pilkington) did NOT fit the vehicle properly and had numerous 'wavy' areas in it so I refused to accept the job. It was replaced by the same shop (a quality shop) with a different brand that fit perfectly.

Not only was the Fuyao Glass (FY) windshield of better quality and fit, the flexible seal piece around the glass (it has to be replaced, too, any time the windshield is) was of a MUCH higher quality.

Look carefully at how your factory glass fits, and how the flexible black trim around it fits. Make sure your new glass fits the same way.

As to how long one has to wait for the job to "set," it varies. There are 'fast set,' 'normal,' and 'slow set' adhesive mixes, depending on temperature when the work is done and other things. The usual, 'normal' adhesives should be left for 5-8 hours, again, depending on temp. The shop should tell you.

Be very careful not to slam the doors with the windows up all the way, close them gently for a couple days - the sudden overpressure of a quickly closed door can sometimes un-seal things a bit until they are fully and completely cured.

Good luck! That's a big chunk of glass for just one guy to put in place...

Thomas, that is very good and useful advise. I might add it will help to lower a side window while the windshield is drying to aid in closing the door without building pressure

Yeah, Jethro, I had front and rear windows all down about 3/8 inch for a few days just to make sure I didn't 'pop' the seal on the install job. That may be a bit of a 'belt and suspenders' sort of action, but I'd rather be certain everything is well cured before stressing it a lot. (Keep in mind, too, that the adhesives cure faster in summer than winter...)

(What I find interesting is that my new glass had taken some rather amazing hits with little damage so far. Buzzing down the freeway and watching a rock come right at you, and hearing that huge *THWAK!* as it hits is nerve wracking. When close inspection later finds only about a 1/32nd inch scar on the glass surface, one is impressed at just how tough glass can be at times.)

I've taken some substantial hits on the stocker with no damage. I know it's only a matter of time before my luck runs out. Knock on wood...

You know I never did post about my results...After about a month since getting it replaced, the new glass is still perfect...Oh and I didn't have a chance to let the windshield cure for 24 hours, the rain began falling about four hours after the tech left my driveway...

The new replacement glass is thicker, and better quality glass...Not sure if the namebrand of it, but I can get it if anyone needs it :D

No new chips yet at all, it's water tight, and believe it or not I even hear less of the outside wind noise than I did before...Oh and the best part is, it also came with a smoked tint strip that matches the factory rear windows perfectly...Total cost was $230.00 tax and all :D

HAPPY DRIVING ALL!!!

My windshield cracked on me this morning. Some salt from a plow truck got me and put a 12in crack in the glass. I know that scions arent very popular in this area. So ive called 6 glass shops now and not one of them even has a listing for my car. I called the dealer and they want $525 for OE glass. Which im not to excited about spending it on a peice of crap glass that breaks when salt hits it. So im trying to find out some manufacturers names so i can find my own glass. Any help would be awsome.
