Default 170,000 Toyota Prius recalled, Among Others

Toyota recalls the prius..

but ALSO the avensis.. isn't the tC based on the avensis? so why isn't the tC being recalled..

The intermediate shaft in the steering column is faulty on the avensis in Europe.. someone want to explain why the tC isn't recalled for this too?

The tC is based on the Avensis... but it's not the same car.

The platform is shared but the US production use a US Camry double break away system that is not on all world wide production. 1 Million units over 4 years probably means certain ones are not holding up the way Toyota wants. It is cheaper to bring those limited batches than messing around. That is about 0.015% of total world wide production from 02 to 05.

Wow less than a tenth of a percent.

Who knows though...

Is the Avensis powered by the same engine? That would have a difference. Even if it is, a slight variance could mean the tC gets different axles.

The avensis mainly uses a small diesel engine. From what I read, our engine isn't available on it at all over there. I could be mistaken tho. Also, isn't the only similarities the chasis, and even the tC is build a little different with stronger/thicker bracing?

You're right. I'm from the UK (where Avensis is available) and you have four engine choices - two petrol engines, two diesel. The "largest" engine size is a 2.2l diesel engine; the 2.4 litre tC engine isn't available in the UK.

Bear in mind everyone drives stick in England - if you see an auto trans, it is a novelty.

Yep, pretty much.

i work at a dealership in service. I set up the appointments here as well as a miriad of other jobs around service, our call log because of all of the news on this has exploded. I would advise people to wait on thier flyer in the mail. There are 170k units being recalled. The flyer has information in it for technicians and a sticker to place in the car to show the recall has been completed.
Also
Toyota said there have been no reported crashes or injuries connected to the problem in the U.S.
that's all the info i have so far.

I dont know if its the same part or not on the tC but cars usually have suppliers and parts made near when the car is assembled. Since the tC is from Japan its parts although possibly the same design would be built in different plants and maybe by different companies as the Avensis.

Well, according to Toyota-Europe.com, the Avensis sedan and Avensis Liftback comes with the 2.4.
I think I may have been reading an older Avensis page before, so I retract my previous statements. Even the Australian version has the 2.4

AND as a matter of fact, looking over those things, and I now see where Scion pulled parts for the RS2.0 tC. The alcantara interior, the Blue paint exterior... all from the Avensis. I just wish we got as many options for the tC as they get over there.

Alot of the similarities are uncanny, from the shifter to the interior door panels.

It starts to shine light on why Scion did what they did with the 2.0

Toyota has stated as FACT that NO Lexus or Scion products were effected and only a 170,000 units (Prius) would be part of the recall . NO ACCIDENTS were reported, NO DAMAGE was reported. Service techs noticed damage when lowspeed heavy side curb hits happenend. The damage was a small crack. It is easier and cheaper to pull in .015% of the cars then make a big deal out of it. Yes that is 1/100th percent of the vehicles. Lets move on to other subjects.
Close and lock this thread up unless we are talking Prius now.
