I have a 2006 xB automatic, bone stock. Last week the VSC/Trac Off/Check Engine lights came on. At first I thought I didn't tighten the gas cap enough so I reset the ECU, re-tightened the gas cap and the lights went away. A couple of days later the lights came on again, so I dropped it off at the local Toyota dealer.
They scanned the codes and these were the codes they came up with:
P0012
C1201
According to the invoice, they found that the VVTI controller (timing gear assembly) was stuck on the lock position. They had to remove the engine head cover, remove the camshaft and replace the VVTI gear assembly.
I had to leave it there for a few days because they had to special order the parts.
I picked up my box this morning and so far so good.

Mine did it too but after I reset the ECU by pulling the fuse and it went away and has not come on since I hope it stay's off too. I had less than 600 miles on mine when it happened now I'm up to 3000

Mine started to do that at around 30,000 miles. After reseting ECU around ten times i took it to the dealer, and mine was with the cam gear also.
That was about 10,000 miles ago and so far it is still good.
same thing happened mid November to mine, just hit 28,000 miles, all fixed under warranty, but it did take a few days ............it had been running ok but just seemed a little less powerful just days before the lights came on.............my brother-in-law scanned it at his shop and found the codes, computer told him the timing was retarded
Same problem here, I'll be taking my box in this weekend for her 30K service, I'm going to bring in your post to show them. I'll let everyone know what happens.
Mine came on today...I was sitting idle during lunch and felt the RPMs go way low. When I looked up I noticed they were on...I'll be taking mine in as well since I just hit 33k...
i use mobil 1 w/ a toyota oil filter.... is that a bad thing? my check engine light hasn't came on. i barely hit 16k miles in my 05 Auto. hmm. i hope this doesn't happen to mine. if so i'mr eady for it. i have 80k mile warranty though. hehe.
Honestly, I think this light comes on with those folks who have an intake. The sensor becomes dirty and you just need to clean it.
I had this problem back in summer time and I desperately searched the site for help.
Low n behold, all you need to buy is an electric contact cleaner. You can purchase it in your radio shack, FRy's, or tiger direct.. what ever is clever.
I sprayed the lil uvula looking object, and all that dirt came right off... good as new. Just to be safe I let it dry for like 10mins before putting it back into my intake...
Solved problem.. I think I made a thread of my journey of this hehe...
