Default messed up fuel door.

this weekend while walking by my car, i noticed that my fuel door was outta alignment. the crease in the fuel door that follows the body line wasn't in sync. and it was sticking out alittle. so i hit the fuel door release and then opened it only to hear a god awful moan. i closed it. wasn't lining up again. opened it again, hear the same noise.

careful inspection, i can see the metal above the gas cap flex as i opened and closed it. and on the outside edge of the fuel door towards the front of the car has begun to chip cause i guess it is rubbing.

this morning when i went to fill up with gas, i was expecting to hear it moan again, but it didn't. i thought it was over, but then it wouldn't latch shut. i had to put some serious body weight into it to make it latch shut. and it still isn't lined up.

my friend said that it is metal, i should just bend it.

i was thinking that i should take it to get checked out at the dealership, i know i'm at +40 K so i got no warranty left. maybe order another fuel cover from like trd sparks, but i'm not sure of the part number.

any thoughts?

i don't know what is wrong, i don't think anybody has been trying to syphon gas outta my tank and i am pretty good about where i park it.

I'd try to carefully see whats not quite right and bend it back into place. Once you figure out whats wrong you might need a tool to work the hinge or even out the gap. Something like a soft plastic tent stake could be shaped on a grinding wheel to make a little pry bar that wouldnt mess up the paint if used carefully.

Then again, kinda hard to say without seeing it.

thats okay. whenever something goes wrong with my car, it means it is time to replace it with an aftermarket part anyway. i'll probably get that cf fuel door. garage1217 said it looks great and has heard good things about them. and his opinion on cf is good enough for me.

alright, thanks to claudia for teaching how to take and post pictures, here is what my fuel door looks like. it is very slight, especially for a silver car, but you can see the whilte marks where the door is rubbing.

and it is taking some persuasion to make it close.

I would just try bending it back. Odds are you just bent the hinge back. Just be careful and bend it to where it belongs. It's free and if you break it, then get a new one.
