2018 Toyota Yaris Review: Anime Eyes and MPGs
Conclusions
As much as I love hatchbacks and subcompacts I cannot recommend the Yaris hatchback. For $20,253 the Yaris SE feels too spartan for the money, but, at the same time, less expensive trim levels are so heavily decontented that they’re not worth buying, either. Then there is the transmission, which affects every level of the user experience.
I, instead, recommend buying the Yaris iA sedan. While the Yaris sedan isn’t as good looking as the hatchback, in my opinion, the modern transmission options and resulting massive fuel economy advantage makes it a no-brainer. Oh, and it has a telescoping steering wheel, too. The trade-off? Well, the Yaris sedan has a slightly less robust version of Safety Sense, with only pre-collision alert, and eight airbags to the Yaris hatch’s nine. It also lacks the sweet projector headlights of the hatchback. It’s also less expensive as a result. A comparably built Yaris sedan rings in at $18,486. That’s a nearly $2,000 dollar savings. Buy some aftermarket projector lights, spend the rest of the cash on a nice vacation, and call it a day.
