Confirmed: More Powerful Scion FR-S on the Way
Scion FR-S engineering chief Tetsuya Tada is updating us with news we want to hear: a more powerful Scion FR-S is coming to showrooms.
There are three possible approaches to how the FR-S will get more power.
Approach #1 – Turbocharging:
Turbocharging would be the easiest method. Subaru has been turbocharging flat-fours for a long time, so it wouldn’t be much of a hassle for the engineering team to bolt a turbo to the FR-S/BRZ and call it a day.
Approach #2 – Hybrid Power:
The most trendy, but least likely approach would be to hybridize the FR-S. As automakers look to increase their Corporate Average Fuel Economy, a performance hybrid would be right up Toyota’s alley. With the newest batch of hybrid hypercars being introduced by Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren, a hybrid FR-S would pay tribute to the future of speed.
Approach #3 – No Replacement for Displacement:
The FR-S could get a bigger 2.5L flat-four with a predicted 254 horsepower. This approach seems more likely, as a 2.5 would add few pounds, and preserve the naturally-aspirated charm that is part and parcel of the FR-S’s character.
Tetsuya Tada told Drive Magazine his team is considering all possibilities. Don’t rule out any of the above approaches.
Regardless of how the FR-S gets its power boost, you’ll have to wait three years until the Scion’s mid-cycle refresh to enjoy the extra power.
