Subaru Chief Shoots Down Idea of Convertible Toyobaru

And just like that, the dreams of cruising in a roofless FR-S go out the door. The prospects were already pretty grim, but these latest statements from Subaru brand chief Yasuyuki Yoshinaga have pretty much shut down any chance for a convertible.

According to an interview with Automotive News at the Tokyo Motor Show, Yoshinaga said “we make the car, so if we don’t make, it can’t happen.” He went on to say that a convertible would require a complete redesign of the structure of the car. It seems the main problem would come from compromising the car’s rigidity. “…The biggest challenge is meeting our internal safety standards,” said Yoshinaga. “There are big technical difficulties.”

Since Subaru handled building the car and Toyota handled the design and styling, it makes sense why we’ve been seeing so much cognitive dissonance on this issue. Toyota has been out flaunting the FR-S Open concept much to the adoration of the american populace, but Subaru likely doesn’t see the demand. On top of that, a convertible will handle worse than the coupe in addition to being less safe.

Would you be into it Subaru changed their mind? Or is the convertible a step in the wrong direction. Join the discussion in the forums here!
