Custom Floormats

Contributed by George

If you try this, you might want to make some paper patterns, as the Scion mats are not really the optimum shape to protect the floor. You can improve considerably on the Scion mats! The Home Depot mat material is on a vinyl backing and conforms very nicely to the bumps and curves of the floor.

1. Here is the label on the mat I bought. Price $18, and there's enough material to do front and rear mats.

[Follow-up: This mat worked OK, but I found even better material at Home Depot. It is heavy-duty carpet runner which is sold by the foot. It comes in a nice black/grey mix that goes well with the interior of the xB.]

2. Here's the driver's mat with the stock $$$ Scion mat for comparison. This is my first attempt that is very close to the stock mat. I plan to replace it with a mat that extends further forward behind the pedals and also runs up the dead pedal on the left.

3. Here's the passenger's mat with the stock $$$ Scion mat for comparison. Note the longer front edge and the omission of the curve in the front right corner. The new mat conforms well to the bulge that the curve avoided, so there was no reason to leave that part of the floor exposed.

4. Here I am laying out the passenger side mat. Note that I left about four inches more material on the front edge of the mat. This provides much better coverage of the floor, as the stock Scion mats don't extend far enough to properly protect the floor.

5. Here is the driver's mat in place. For some reason the flash makes the mat look brownish, but it is actually black with white threads, which goes very well with the seats and carpet. I am not completely happy with the way this mat covers the floor, and plan to make another one that omits the little cutout above the gas door handle and that extends further behind the pedals and up the dead pedal. The dead pedal is a prime wear area and really needs to be under the mat.

its been raining here in socal, so I put in my $10(sale) tough quality rubber mats.
it has a ricey red color in the middle, so I decided to cut a show booth carpet and screw(allen) it in. later if I find a cheap(scrap) aluminum sheet, i'll replace that part.

Re: Creating your own floormats

Did this using Home Depot's black runner material. Looks great, conforms to floor well. Thanks for the idea/write-up.

Create your own floor mats

I made mine from the Home Depot runner mat year and a half ago. Followed the directions from a previous thread. They wear out about every 6 months, but they are cheap. Made the floor mats for front and back, also mat for the trunk area.
