Neon Lighting Install

To install neons you should have the following.

*THIS WILL WORK ON ALL THREE SCION MODELS*

*Wire (preferably red/black)
*Soldering iron
*Heat Shrink
*Test pencil
*solder
*side cutters
*cable ties/screws
*Varieties of wire connectors
*Cigaretter lighter/Matches (for heatshrink)

When installing neons you need to be careful with where you run your power wire to and if you are splicing into another wire to gain power make sure you know what that wire is and when it is live.

Get the test pencil and connect one end of it to a bolt or a piece of bare metal for it to earth on. If you are installing neons onto the cigarette lighter pull out the socket whish is generally held in with a panel, Pull that panel out so it reveals the back of the socket.

Turn the cars ignition onto ACESSORIES. Get the test pencil again and press it into a wire. If it lights up then its the power wire. If not its the earth. Turn the ignition off again. Cut the power wire with a pair of side cutters. Cut the plug off the end of your neons. Strip the casing off the neon wires (the wire with a chase is the power) and do the same with the power wire from the cigarette lighter on both sides. Put heat shrink around one of the current power wires. Then twist all 3 wires together and carefully solder them together. Then slide the heat shrink over teh join and heat up to protect teh bare wires.

Find a spot near by to connect the earth to. Put a wire connector on the end (preferably a ring type) and put the bolt through and bolt to the body.

Then put the panel back into position and turn the ignition to acessories and the neon will light up.

MULTIPLE NEONS

When connecting multiple neons carry out the previous instructions but you strip back the casing and join the coresponding wires. Take some more wire and put a piece of heat shrink around the wire as before. Then twist the wires together and solder together. Then move the heat shrink over bare wires and heat up.

NEONS CONNECTED TO A SWITCH

Connecting neons to a seperate switch can be dificult if you haven't had some sort of experience with electronics before.

Cut the cigaretter lighter adapter plug off the end of the neon wires. You need to get an apropriate switch with at least 2 prongs ont eh back to solder teh wires to. Once again you need to find a power source. as mentioned above i recommend the power wire from the cigaretter lighter. Splice into it and run a wire from there up to your switch to where ever you decide to place it. On one side of the switch (doesn't matter what side) You need to solder this power wire to which ever prong you like. Also put heat shrink around this wire/prong to protect bare wires.

Then get the power wire of the neons and run it to the otehr side of the switch. To save wire blukage at the rear of your switch join another single wire onto the current neon power wires if you are running more then one neon. Run the wire to the other side of the switch, wolder it and cover it over with heat shrink. That part of it is now done. You can now put the switch into its permenant position as it doesn't need to come out again.

Then get the remaining earth wires on the neons and run them to a near by earth point on the body. put the apropriate connector on it and conect to body.

Then switch the ignition onto acessories again and flick the switch and the neons will turn on.

This method is recommended for all installations.

Hope this helps. Thanks for checking out my how to.

holy dead thread batman!!

Well I grounded mine to a bolt under the hood when I did mu foglights. All you need to do is find a bolt that sonects to metal there are alot it's just a matter of finding them. As long as the bolt sccrews in to metal your fine

PhillyCamoBox 05-28-2006 07:12 PM

ok thanks i figured that but its muggy here today and i felt like being lazy and not have to look for one. I was hoping someone would reply with what they used but no biggie at all. Thanks :)
