Drain Plug Washer
 

Everytime I change my motor oil, I always have trouble removing the washer off the drain plug. It feels like it is almost bonded onto the washer and it is not possible for me to remove...Has anyone had this problem and have any good recommendations? Would it be that I overtightened the plug when I changed my oil the previous time?

I believe it is pretty much supposed to be like that to make sure the seal is tight and that you don't leak from the plug.

I can't remember exactly what the torque spec is but I think it's somewhere in the 22-25 lb. ft. range for the drain plug.

but then how do you replace the washer everytime you change your oil? i resorted to using a new drain plug so i can use a new washer

If you buy from a Toyota dealership, ask them for one. They gave me one last time.

oh i meant how do you remove the old washer from the drain plug...that's the problem i'm having...it just doesn't want to come off after trying to pry it...I have new washers but i can't get the old washer off the plug...thanks for your response

Mine came off with a flathead screw driver. Make sure you're not prying the part of the drain plug itself. The washer should not be on there that tighter. Check the outside of the oil pan after you take the plug off.

Just as Edmond stated just take a flathead screwdriver to it and just hit it off of the pan it shouldn't harm anything I do it everyday since I work on them. Its normal for the gasket to stick to the pan due to pressure of tightening the plug and the heat from the engine oil inside.

Just use a flat head screw driver to carefully pry it off. I usually put a little bit of oil on both sides of the washer so it doesnt stick the next time you take it off.

Thanks guys for the responses...I finally was able to get it off after putting the plug under cold water and then slowly prying...I do think I overtightened the last time causing it to be so hard to take off
