Hey guys quick question, i did my 1st oil change at 1k miles, i put the blend 5w 30. (45 bucks to do oil change)

But should i keep using the same oil, or should i change to the cheaper oil (20 bucks)



and what do you guys really use all the time ??

You paid $45 for a oil change? The first three oil changes from Scion are free. Also you should have waited a little longer for the first oil change. The original oil could possibly be special break in oil. I am not sure if it is or not, but someone that changed their oil here said the original oil was a lot thicker than normal oil.

Is the blend synthetic oil? If it is synthetic arent you supposed to wait a lot longer than 1000 miles to start using it?

the first hundred miles sees the most wear in the engine, you should have changed the oil sooner...
scion gives you three free oil changes (can be used whenever), maybe he wants to save them for later....

i have not meet anyone that can tell the oil weight from draining the oil...

and true, if you switched to synthetic at 1000 miles, it was too soon

How do you know there is no such thing as special break in oil? Have you tested it? One of the first people here that changed their oil back in July reported it was much thicker than normal oil. Honda uses a special break in oil noted in the owners manual. The Scion TC interval for changing oil as listed in the manual is 5000 miles.

Most newer cars if not all have magnets that attract all the metal shavings that used to float around in the oil. True changing your oil early in older cars was a benefit back then but with the advent of newer technology there is no reason to change your cars oil so early.

i know there is no special break in oil in our motors. there are extra lubricating products used in our motor when building them (ie.. cam lube, bearing grease...) these products keep metal from rubbing on metal during the first startup..
just because it seems thicker does not mean it is thicker. i could pour 20-50 and 0-30 and nobody could tell the diff.

even if the cars have magnets (only on the drain bolt), not everything inside the motor is made from ferrious metals. they will not be attracted to the one little magnet.

like i first stated about oil brand debate, this too is a widely debated topic. it has been discussed many times on these boards and have never given an answer....

There is nothing wrong with using synthetic oil before 1,000 miles. Many cars these days come with synthetic oil at 0 miles. Synthetic oil was designed for a reason - it lubricates and protects better than anything you'll find naturally occuring. Whether on a new engine or an old one your engine is better off with synthetic.

you should continue to use 5w30 (as the owner's manual suggests) but the type of oil is up to you...i opted to pay more and use mobil 1 synthetic instead of other types of oil for my first oil change. next oil change, i might use mobil 1 again or maybe royal purple or amsoil...

use any type of 5w30 oil

you maintain your car you wont have a problem
i think synthetic is waste if you maintain your car but it gives some people a peace of mind which can be worth the extra $10-20

the first 3 oil changes are free from scion. and then my dealership that i got my xB from does them for the life of the vehicle (along with a 21 point inspection) for only $ 9.95

I'd recommend oil change every 4000 mile
 

I did my 4th oil change yesterday (1000m, 5000m, 10,000m and 15,000m). I have noticed the oil was very dark like soy sauce. I drive mostly highway about 2500m/month. I'd suggest more frequent oil change than recommended. My 2 cents :)

I do mine every 3000 miles or three months, whichever comes first. Sythetic Oil only for me!!!

I just go my 5K oil change (service), first oil change I might add at the toyota service. I got home and checked the oil and it seemed somewhat dark. Is it suppose to be like that? Or is it suppose to be really light?

wouldnt they obviously tell u if needed to be changed at 1000miles? they put a sticker on my car when i picked it up Feb27th or 3750miles, so i think i'll hit the date before the mileage and right now im a little over a 1000. and thats when i'll change the oil. i even have a print from toyota from scion listing over the next couple of years/mileage what should be checked out or replaced.

i used up all my free oil changes already. 1st change at 1K miles, 2nd one at 3k miles, 3rd at 6K miles and 4th one at 9K miles. i switched over to royal purple 5w30 recently and using the trd oil filter as well.

You can change oil when you want there are cars with 10,000 mile change intervals like VW and then there are secret recalls where the dealers change out blown 1.8T as the oil is just jello sludge on the bottom of the crankcase. Toyota had the same issue with the V6 when they tried extended drains, so at least Scion has cut it back to 5000 miles which is really the MAX for dino lube.

For me and my car 1000 miles bye bye dino lube and then every 5000 miles with Mobile One.

BTW Castro Syntec is not synthetic contains no synthetic, and it is just a marketing ploy that they stamp "100% synthetic" on the bottle.

I like Amsoil too, but Modile one

i changed my oil yesterday because my"maintainance required"light came on,but I haven't found in the owners manual how to turn the "maintainance required" light off.Any suggestions?

actually there is something wrong with using synthetic before you break in your motor. synthetic lubricates too well and doesnt allow the rings the friction they need to make a good seal to the bore. the factory puts a crosshatch pattern on the bore so the rings will wear against it and both rings and bore become a perfect match of each other. with synthetic the rings never get a chance to really rub against the bore and the seal is never properly made. ask any engine builder they will tell you to drain the synthetic out of your new car and break the motor in with dino oil.

1. Turn on the ignition and make sure it is on your odometer display, not the trip display.
2. Turn off your ignition. Hold down the trip meter reset button and turn the ignition on. Keep the button pushed in.
3. The maintenance required light will flash for a few seconds. when it turns off, let go of the reset button.

Sealing occurs during the first 20 miles of the engine whether on the road (not likely) or in the factory during testing (more likely). So most of the cars that are fresh off the factory with 10 miles or so has probably experienced much more than that~~

There are many cars that come from the factory with synthetic fill in the crankcase. Mobil will also tell you its fine to use thier synth oil from day one. All corvettes come from the factory with Mobil-1. There are many out there with 150K+ miles with no issues. These oils are formulated to perform in the real world and need no special attention. They have a higher shear strength, suspend dirt better, last longer and keep the engine cleaner. Early versions of the synth oils were too slick and not recommended for break-in. That has all changed and synth oils are superior and compatible with conventional oils
