xB oil change DIY
 

Couldnt find one.... so I made one....

first off, find a suitable xb that needs an oil change

next make a run to your local auto parts store for oil, an oil filter, a funnel (i always use fresh clean funnels for oil) a cheapo bucket, and washer fluid (because i was out)

jack the car up, one side at a time, and crawl under the front end, and remove the two bolts for the plastic guard and bend it out of the way

locate the drain plug

and the oil filter on the engine

::BEFORE YOU CONTINUE MAKE SURE TO TAKE THE OIL CAP OFF THE HEAD SO THAT THE OIL WILL DRAIN::

remove the drain plug, and let oil drain into cheapo bucket

::REINSTALL THE DRAIN PLUG, ONCE THE OLD IL HAS DRAINED OUT:::


remove the oil filter, ::CAREFUL, IT IS FULL OF OIL, DO NOT TILT IT::

::FILL THE NEW OIL FILTER WITH OIL, AND MAKE SURE TO APPLY SOME OIL, WITH YOUR FINGER, TO THE SEAL ON THE FILTER::

install filter, make sure it is good and tight, then give it another 1/4 turn

Add oil, carefully!!!1

place oil cap back on head

close the hood, wash your hands, and return to scionlife

Good work. My question is this: Do you have to remove that plastic cover? I am not sure where exactly it is located from your pic. I do not have to remove any such shroud to change mine.

each xb has the plastic shroud/cover under the car... it covers the oil filter, so if you want a clear shot at it you need to remove the shroud.....

The 2-piece shroud appears to cover the filter if you look at it from the front. But once you get under the engine, there is enough room behind the plastic shrould to remove the filter. It is not worth the effort to remove the shroud, and I have not done it for my two oil changes.

And the plastic lower bumper does not need to be touched.

I did remove the shroud to get to the transmisison plugs:

not if you have very large arms and hands like myself, and i did not remove the shroud, i simply loosened it and bent it out of the way

I just did mine last week. taking off 3 nuts to take off the shroud isn't an effort.
In my case the filter is a pain. I have to buy that $4 kragen filter wrench adaptor(for rachet) to remove the filter. so before you decide to take off the oil drain plug on the next oil change, make sure the filter can be removed easily by hand.

or more simply, place a large set of channelocks on the filter, squeze down a little to indent the filter, then spin it counterclockwise.....

even easier way.... drive a straight screwdriver through the oil filter from one side to another...

but great warning

like I said, I just change my oil. I passed 20k now and my maintenance light blinks about 6 times, is this normal? do I need to reset this? how?

okay, found it!
The "REQUIRED MAINTENANCE" light comes on every 5,000 miles to remind you to change your oil. Press the odometer button and turn the key to the on postion and wait for the odometer reading to count down and stop blinking. This will reset the required maintenance light. If you want more info on how to do this.......READ YOUR MANUAL.

That's exactly what the manual says ---
From Owners Manual, Section 1-6, Page 80:
1. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position with the odometer reading shown. (For details, see "Odometer and two trip meters" on page 75.)
2. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position while holding down the trip meter reset knob. Hold down the knob for at least 5 seconds. The light goes off, and the display shows zero for 1 second and changes to the odometer reading. If the system fails to reset, the light will remain on or keep flashing.

Greetings Box owners:
Is there a crush washer on the drain plug? Or O-ring? I just did mine and didn't see either..I looked thru the old oil to see if it dropped out and no luck?

Yes, sometimes it stays stuck to the oil pan.

Good catch to look in the drain pan for the washer. If its not on there, it will weep oil...you will know.

Same here. I did my first change at 500 miles and found no washer, so I put the plug back in that way. Then I found that there are washers. I bought ten filters and ten washers and used a washer on the next change. They are solid aluminum washers, not crushable and so can be reused several times before they get too pressed and deformed to be any good.

cool how much oil do i need when i do the oil change?

a gallon works... you only need like 3.7 quarts though...

Page 219 of the Owners Manual says use 3.9 quarts, if also changing the filter. If not changing the filter, it says use 3.6 quarts.

what's the bolt size to get off the shroud and also the drain plug?

You don't need to remove any part of the shroud to remove the filter. The drain plug is 14mm, I think. Be sure to get a proper drain plug washer. They are a part number, made of two washers, with a thin rubber on each side and in the middle.
