Help Bryan Eat

This is a different request, but deal with it.

I'm trying to eat some different meals and foods, mostly meatless or soy/tofu-based "meats" and stuff. I'm trying out some Boca stuff right now just to see what it's like.

What I would like to know is if anybody has any suggestions or advice on some products. So, do you? I'm looking for both things I can find in a normal grocery/market and the affordable stuff, too (college student)! So please, send them in, thanks!

And hey, just a personal note, if you can comfortably afford organic foods, please consider them over other products. I'm asking this not for your sake, but the sake of the farmers/ranchers/workers and the communities that they're a part of. Thanks.

Skeorx13 Jun 6, 2007 08:32 PM

If you do buy organic make sure they are local farmers. A good chunk of the "organic farmers" are actually just big corporations that can afford to ship long distances. They spoil faster as well.

Personally I'm against vegetarianism and abhorred by vegans, but whatever floats your boat man... By the way, there are certain necessary nutrients you CANNOT get from non-meat products. There is no way around it. (Like some B-vitamins. The only way to get them is from suppliments which get them from ground up liver.) So unless you are willing to make an exception like that you are actually going to injure your body, somewhat. And as long as you make even one exception you cannot call yourself vegetarian. /rant

There was actually a really good article in the paper a few months ago about eating healthy on a budget of like $7 a day. I'll have to see if I have it in my bookmarks at home.

my suggestion to you...get a book, it's called "The Okinawa Diet Plan", i found it at borders...anyways...

The Okinawan's use a lot of soy based products and here's an interesting fact...they have the highest population percentage of centenarians (people that are older than 100), not only that, but they are more fit than anyone else in the world.

anyways, that's my plug.

they've got three types of recipes too; eastern/okinawan, eastern fusion and western....that way if you're afraid of asian food you can make stuff that's more westernized.

good luck

Vegetarian my self (although ive had a turkey sandwhich or two every now and then ) and i mostly eat soy/boca etc/

I got a few things that I like to make

1. Take Boca Italian sausge, dice it up and cook it, then take some premade veggies, stir fry em and throw in the sausage and some spices like garlic, red pepper, curry, corriander, salt and pepper. Then maybe some tomatoe paste and and some cheese/italian sauce you have a good stew.

Another is a sandwhich i like to make,

Take some boca spicy chicken patties, cooked or bbq it, and some bread, some habenero jack cheese and put it all on a bun with some onions and some pasta sauce and put it on on the bread and u have a good sandwhich. i got other ideas too :D

Thanks for the help. And that sounds REALLY delicious! :P

lol np. also a good idea is get some boca sausage ground and substitute it with anything like taco's put it in ur eggs, etc. lol. i live off that stuff.

GarmaZed Jun 6, 2007 09:41 PM

Yeah, I'm mostly doing the Boca burgers right now, it's just simple. But I'm going to move onto their sausage soon. Tried the meatless Lasagna... and I'm not too impressed with that. :(

kanundrum Jun 6, 2007 09:43 PM

yea its okkk. i mainly like there sausage and there chicken patty, there morning wraps are pretty good as well. Morning star has better sausage patties.

some of my friends are vegan, a few even raw foodist.

I've told them many times, you're simply not getting all your vitamins. they won't even take multivitamins like centrums because some process to extract iron and certain other nutrients come from cow's blood.

one thing to do after you do these type of diets for a while, is go to the doctor to get your testorone checked. Had a couple friends who had super low testorone after doing the vegan/raw foodist thing for a while. (seriously ever wonder why guys that go on those diets are uberpassive, non-sexual?)

really they're worse than women. I'll pick up bread for dinners(i cook for friends alot), and low and behold milk cultures is honestly the last ingredient on the bag. they won't touch it.

really, commit yourself to eating an egg at least twice a week, and take centrums daily.

I'm not too concerned about losing vitamins or anything, because I'm not going entirely Veg-. I'm still going to also eat normal meals, but I wanted to mix in some other things, too. I'm just testing my pallet and seeing how the water feels.

Wow, you're pretty right on with that. Every vegetarian I've known has either been a girly-man of sorts or ___.

Good luck with your almost vegetarianism. I don't think I could ever do it.

these are the shiznite:

Dave's Spaghetti
1 can of Contadina "Italian seasoned" paste
1 can of Hunt's "Garlic & Herb", "Roasted Garlic" or "Traditional" spaghetti sauce
(below is optional ~for a chunky pasta)
1 can of Dole's Pasta Style diced tomatoes(don't drain)

1. put pot on burner, turn to 25%-30% heat (preheating doesn't matter)
3. add the sauce and paste(and pasta sauce if you choose)
4. mix well & season with teaspoon of garlic powder (or 5-6 crushed garlic wedges) w/maybe a lil' oregano & pepper
5. let pot set for about 1.5hours (w/lid if you don't want to have to watch) hours & stir every 10-15 minutes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dave's Fresh Salsa
6 Medium-large tomatoes (cut into 1/3"-1/2" cubes)
1 Medium Onion (cut into 1/4" pieces)
1 Cilantro cluster (cut VERY fine)
3 Stalks of green onion (cut fine & use most of the "green part")
1 Serano pepper(take out seeds and cut VERY fine)
Generous amount of garlic powder(or 3-6 garlic cloves pressed), lemon pepper, pepper & a pinch of salt
1 Medium lemon(just the juice)

mix it all up very well, put in tupperware(and give it a few more good shakes) and let set in refrig for 4+ hours;
then shake the salsa up in the tupperware and then taste a little because you may need to add more lemon juice
(it's best 24-48 hours later, but after 72 hours it begins to go bad. You can tell when it starts to smell a little sweet. Throw that ____ away.)

That was incredibly funny...

But really - check out Gardenburger ribs... they're effin good.
And Morningstar sausage crumbles, you can put that ish in anything.
Also, if you have a Trader Joes near you, they have meatless meatballs that, with some french bread, mozzarella, peppers and pasta sauce makes a wicked sandwich.

kanundrum Jun 7, 2007 02:53 PM

^^ agreed and that meatball sub thing is good as well

Veganism is inhumane.

Soy/Tofu meat is part of what is wrong with the world.
