What you mean joints? And no speaker grill. The speaker is just there. Ill try to get a pic of how it is when I get home.

Alright. So here's a picture of the actual spot where the sub sits with how thick the wood that sits on top is.
Second pic shows how the top piece protects the sub, if you want you could probably put something there to protect it from something you put there going down and hitting the sub when you have your mat on top.
