OMG that's hilarious! Wait, crap, I've got the same one.... That looks like it was fun to handle to get off the road. What's the speed rating on those anyway?

Still... that speed warning is more due to the tire, not the wheel itself. That wheel should've held up.

i would of moved a rear tire to the front and put the spare on the rear so it doesn't ruin the transmission...

^ I agree, wouldn't want to run any space-saver type spare on the front of any FWD car.

The only explanation I can come up with is the wheel got too hot from either low pressure in the spare or the heat from the flat tire before or that the lug nuts were improperly tightened (either too loose or too tight). Of course, you can't rule out what you can't see so there might have been flaws in the metal construction of the rim.

Yea, I bet it was that hub ring. The spare is already hubcentric, no need for a ring. The ring would've prevented it from fully seating properly. Regardless, it shouldn't have broken like that, but if it was just floating over the hub ring and you hit a pot hole, it's possible.

glad you are okay. how bad was the damage to the box? no other accidents?
so your going to sue toyota?

i don't know, you were going too fast. not sure what the exact rating is, but it should be over 55 mph. then on a front wheel drive car, it should be switched to the rear wheel. and lastly, unless a toyota dealership or garage put that on, it could be that you didn't properly torque it down.

The torque and speed dont matter when you have a hub ring on there still. It won't seat properly and will wobble enough to heat the bastard up and it'll eventually break. "for temporary use only"

yeah but if theres no directions on the spare, or in the manual saying to remove the ring before putting the spare on, and the ring is what caused it, then that could be pointed at toyota.

The ring isn't on there from the factory. It is put on when you put aftermarket wheels on the vehicle. When the aftermarket wheel was took off to put on the spare the ring should have been removed also...
