I was wondering for those out there that have HIDs, CAI, and/or any other modified stuff on your cars what would pass inspection and what would get you a nice little red rejection sticker.
I know I could call up DMV, but it is not that serious right now. I was wondering what problems you guys went through.
No smart A_ _ comments either please.
Thanks.
O yea and for those with Medical Excemption from DMV, and went darker than allowed lol did they use a tint meter to test it out or what? I never seen anyone use a tint meter since it is illegal to have tints in the front so no measuring needed. So I wonder if they test it or if you just show them the paper and they say ok cool. Comments?

U will automatically fail with tints.....By NJ Law u can only have the back windows tinted 35%, Aftermarket header..you will fail...Axle back exhaust you should pass...If your car is too drop another fail....Cold Air Intake not really sure...

I head it does not matter with CAI becuase we are not in cali. But trd CAI is not carb exempt I wonder if they will pick at us for that when they open the hood?

OK from what I understand things that will get you a lil red sticker for and extra 45 days....until reinspection
1- Front tints
2- Hids to a point I think anything over 6000K you def can tell its aftermarket...since all the new cars are using 4300K and 6000K factory hid systems it may be ez'r for you to get away with it as long as your hi and low beams are working... (EZ fix tho, remove only the bulb and plug your stocks into factory plugs... this is a great thing about the pnp hid kits now adays)
3- More than one auxilary light (meaning if you have fogs and another set of lights besides the fog its a fail...)
4- Even with a axleback you can fail depending on how loud it is..
5- If a car is dropped and it is not able to make it up that small ramp that they have to test the brakes then yea you def fail... by state law you have to be at least 12 inches off the ground from the bottom of the bumper to the ground...
6- Tinted heads/tails
7- color bulbs that are not OE (yes white bulbs will fail you)
8-CAI will fail no matter which one, if its not CARB legal and has a sticker proving that it is you fail!!
9- last but not least the big CEL/SES light on dash....
Remember even if you car is bone stock you still have a 50/50 chance of failing thanks to the dam emissions that changes on a daily here in NJ!!!
Solution:
Find yourself someone with a hookup or take a shot at a local mom/pop shop they are a lil more ez'r to work with since they are looking to make biz off inspections!

She has about 3-4 inches of ground clearance from the bottom of the lip kit on her tC to the ground - did not fail her. They took her car on the flat lane to test the brakes.
She also has a CAI on her tC as well and no questions asked and she also has an aftermarket header/exhaust as well. As long as there is no CEL, then you should be good to go.
We took her tC to one of the state inspection stations, I believe it was the one in Edison (or near Edison).
Not all of that is true. I will use my wife's tC as a reference.

Mike,
Remember I stated to my understanding...lol, nah but I know the one in Flemington if your car is lowered and they cant get it over that lil ramp thing they fail you for being too low and then give you the 12 inches off the ground story (they dont actually measure it...its just what they say) and these same dudes are the ones who opened my hood (on my galant) saw my SRI and told me that it was not carb legal I had to get off the line...lmao true story...haha
It comes down to this I guess who you come across (if they know about aftermarket items and want to be toolbag they will mess with you)and where you go... I did notice that if you go towards the end of the month towards the end of the day they rush to get you out and dont really check much only your emissions and the suspension.... my wifes car flew thru and her car is not in tip top shape even had her brake lights out...lmao
As for Exhaust I dont really know because I never had the chance to put on one yet but I was told you will fail if its too loud..my homeboy had his 4G eclipse finely tuned with a cat back N1 exhaust and they failed him for it being to loud... no cel or anything... and I am not mistaken it was the one in Edison (Stelton Rd) too but I could be wrong...

Jay, its cool.
I was stating my experience with some of the mods the OP specifically was asking about. It may vary from station to station but the one we would take our tC to, never gave us any issues.
I also used to take my xB to the same inspection station and that to is pretty low and has a CAI/header/exhaust as well and never had an issue either

So I looked into the DMV website and noticed that it said something about starting Jan. 09 all cars have to meet the california low emission vehicle program standard. So are we screwed here , I am asking especially to those with modified cars, I mean I have a trd intake but it is not CARB excempt hmm... I feel like many cars will fail in nJ am I reading this right?

Last I heard, checked Only the TRD is C.A.R.B. legal, all others are not. If you have the normal TRD Intake you should be ok...
For Example the xB2 TRD CAI Listed as 50 state Emisions legal...

Just make sure you don't have any CELs and you should be fine.
What's the absolute worst that could happen anyway? They will fail you, which our tC actually did initially because of a CEL.
Again, just sharing my experience with our car that has similar mods that you are concerned with.
LMAO I work at willow brook mall.... During xmas wayne pd and the sheriff dept are always around. A cop from wayne pd and deputy was waiting for me.. He asked if he could see my sticker. I was like ok. Then he asked where I got it cause the color of the sticker was a little off... And we went from there. He knew cause my old car had exhaust, body kit, and that stuff. Really I didn't know it was fake but the way I got it was questionable...
