Error code p0012
I'm a casualty of the dreaded Error code P0012....
Thanks to Knechts for running the code for me and thank goodness for John and Phils Toyota in Corvallis.. They had the gear in stock, hooked me up with a fancy Senia (sp) minivan until Friday and not one question asked. I told them the error code and they just started the paperwork.. I was in and out in less than 20 minutes... It was a great stop... Great dealership... I haven't checked the book yet to see how far down they have to tear stuff down, but I did request that if they have the timing belt pulled, that they replace it with a new one. I've only got 40k on it, but having it replaced now will save me the labor costs and I won't have worry about it again (I generally sell around 120k). |
Your vehicle has a timing chain, not a timing belt. Not as cheap to replace. You may want to clarify with them prior to just having them do it.
|
What is this code you speak of?
|
Please give more info what is the code and what happens  . It seems they just accepted the fact like maybe it's common? I have 33,000 so just want to know if there is some big cash out lay comming my way. :eyes:

there's a lengthy thread that talks about it on the 1st. Gen xB page. There is a TSB on it that lengthens the warrenty to cover this particular item to like 60k.
Something to the effect that your car isn't advancing and retarding properly. They basically replace the cam gear. There is range of vin numbers on the thread and I believe it's a 2005 issue (might cover 2004 also, but not sure). They said it will not damage the motor, but some folks, such as myself felt the car get a little sluggish at times. thanks for the clairification on the belt/chain... I need to call them in the morning |
Thanks. I have a 2005 Grrr. I'll try to find the thread.

DTC P0012 - Camshaft Timing Gear
The gear is the controller for the VVTI (Variable Valve Timing w/ Intellegence). The purpose of the VVTI is to change the camshaft duration to improve high end performance. So at lower speeds the VVTI Camshaft Gear is in its normal position, but at higher speeds the Camshaft Gear changes the duration of the valve timing to increase performance. The TSBs' (Technical Service Bulletin) T2 Code of 19 implies that the Camshaft Timing Gear is worn, where the T1 Code of 8A implies the MIL (Check Engine Light) has illuminated. When this condition occurs, the Camshaft Timing Gear defaults to its normal position, and the increased performance at higher speeds is inoperative. There is no damage to occur while this condition is present, nor is it unsafe to drive. The typical warranty on this component is 5 years or 60,000 miles, there has been no increase to the coverage of this component. You can check your VIN to see if your fit within the TSB's VIN range, affected vehicles would have a lower number than the underlined below: [table:09b0e581dd] [mrow:09b0e581dd]MODEL[mcol:09b0e581dd]ENGINE[mcol:09b0e581dd]PRODUCTION CHANGE EFFECTIVE VIN [row:09b0e581dd]Scion xA [col:09b0e581dd]1NZFE[col:09b0e581dd]JTK KT6#4 #60159004 [row:09b0e581dd]Scion xB[col:09b0e581dd]1NZFE[col:09b0e581dd]JTL KT3#4 #64078922 [/table:09b0e581dd] # = any character / number Keep in mind this is not to be confused with a recall, this is a Technical Service Bulletin that has been sent to the Toyota Dealers to outline a product issue and its resolution. As always, just the presence of this code does not imply this is the repair your vehicle would require, and would still need an offical diagnosis. The above information is provided by Toyota to assist the technician in the diagnostic process. Thats my knowledge, enjoy. Id be happy to answer any other questions you might have (or dispel any other myths). |
So is it only the last 6 digits of the VIN that need to be lower? I'm just confused because where the "64xxxxxx" is on the example, mine has 50xxxxxx
|
Wow that explains what we have been experiencing too. Like Matt I thought it was bad gas as it would come and go.
|
So thats why Its been running like POO!!!
I thought it was bad gas as well (I dont mean the Taco Bell kind either!!) I am calling for an appt right now. |

50xxxxxx
The 5 indicates its a 2005 model, the 0 is a check digit that i have no idea what it means and the xxxxxx is the sequencial build number. So... if the tsb includes 05's then the xxxxxx will be lower than the production period listed as the sequencial build number continues thru several years (same body style i suspect) |
