CONFIRMED: Toyota / Subaru RWD Coupe for 2011

UPDATE:

New story from Autoblog today on this subject:http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/10/t...-subaru-boxer/

At a press conference in Japan today, Toyota CEO Katsuaki Watanabe finally confirmed that his company is jointly developing a pair of rear-wheel-drive sports cars with Subaru. Each brand will get its own version of the car, which will be powered by one of Subaru's boxer engines, though the engine's displacement, power output and even number of cylinders is not yet known.

AutoCar procured a sketch of the oft-rumored and all-but-confirmed lightweight coupe that's being jointly developed between Subaru and Toyota, and their sources confirm that the final design will be signed off in July.

It's too generic looking...

Hsua 04-09-2008 05:13 PM

seems too god to be true, but if they are planning on going through with what's planned, these things are going to sell like hotcakes.

CarbonXe 04-09-2008 05:17 PM

Read the article. They said it would come out as a RWD Subaru, then if successful, possibly a Toyota.

Toyota or Subbie, sign me up.

I am game. The most responsive n/a motor I ever had was a 2.2L sohc ej22. Modified that thing was amazing. They make it look a tad more sporty and I will buy.

I am SO in. Looks sleek. Please don't make it tall...

Watching. Waiting.

I hope they improve the design. It has a 90's front end. Looks like a Mercury Cougar.

or heavy. hell, I'd settle for a lightweight RWD 2-seat hatchback with 170hp and ~2500 lbs. maybe it's just the pessimist in me talking, but I'm afraid it'll get released exactly as that in Japan, and then they'll Americanize it for us by adding 2 more rows of seats, 1000lbs, FWD, some funky sheetmetal and colorful lighted cupholders and sell it as the new tC.

I like the front end :P Perhaps a little face lift or a lil futurising :ponder:
As for the rear:

It actually looks a lot like that concept AE86 drawing that was done years ago.

nope. I'll take a hard-hitting turbo over a rev-happy, torqueless engine. :P

R2D2 04-09-2008 09:29 PM

if its subie it'll probably be awd like their other cars which will add the 1k lbs.
if its toyota it'll have the lovely accessories you mentioned that will add the 1k lbs.

theres no way car companies will make what we really want, theyre like strippers. all they do is tease and leave you wanting...
