Toyota executives were more upbeat when talking about new vehicles, including the Venza, a midsize automobile they described as a crossover sedan.
Most of the industry’s crossover vehicles are sport utility vehicles built on the underpinnings of cars, which gives them a smoother ride and better fuel economy than S.U.V.’s built on a truck chassis.
But the Venza, which will be built in Georgetown, Ky., is meant for drivers who are no longer interested in driving S.U.V.’s, or conventional crossovers, yet like a higher sitting position and the ability to transport cargo, like athletic gear or gardening supplies.
The Venza, which resembled a smaller version of the Toyota Highlander or the Lexus RX, will replace the Camry Solara, a coupe version of the Camry sedan. It will reach the market later this year as a 2009 model. Venza will be introduced with a V-6 engine rated at 268 horsepower, 20-inch wheels and a six-speed automatic transmission. Toyota also plans to introduce a version with a four-cylinder engine and 19-inch wheels. The company did not give fuel economy estimates or disclose Venza’s price.

Re: Toyota to launch US-made crossover Venza
Personally I like a sporty coupe as compared to another CUV / SUV type vehicle.
I would plead to Toyota bring back the Celica/Supra. Please!
I guess if Ford, GM & Chrysler can do it; Toyota has no choice but to join the party.

Looks like a minivan in an SUV outfit.. I don't think people would like to be known as a "minivan" driver, but would like the benefits of having one.
I think with a minor change here and there it would look a lot more youthy (new word ) perhaps changing the grill and i don't know.. fogs..

That design was based off the 2005 Toyota FT-SX concept. The original Ford Edge design was not unveiled until NAIAS 2006. The 2005 Ford Equator concept has a similar grille, but that's it. The closest thing that Ford showed, is the 2006 iosis X concept / 2007 Ford Kuga.
The Venza is awfully close to the FT-SX, so I'd really have to say that it's the other way around...Ford is taking styling cues from Toyota.

Actually, the Edge and Venza look really similar. If the Venza weren't so long, the Venza would be the more stylized twin of the more blocky Edge. But I'll say it's coincidence, as one year between the debut of the FT-SX and the Edge isn't sufficient time to say that Ford copied Toyota, and the existence of the FT-SX prior to the Edge's release is a clear indication that Toyota didn't rip-off the Edge, either.

Scions to get new, larger 2.7ltr 4cyl engine?
you ALL are missing the point with this new Toyota
yea, the Venza is a just a tall camry wagon -- who cares
that's not the important news
with the unveiling, Toyota stated that the Venza will be available in either the 3.6ltr V6 or a new 2.7 ltr 4cyl -- which Toyota states is all-new. industry analyst say this new 4cyl will better compete with Honda's 4cyl -- so expect near 190hp with even better fuel economy than the current 2.4ltr we have in the tC and xB2. article HERE
so my thinking:
Venza is based on Camry - thus Camry gets new 4cyl
and since the Scion xB and tC use the same engine, Scion gets the new 4cyl as well?

^^^pretty much that is what Toyota will do. Toyota hasn't have the facelifted Camry out yet, and they Just introduce the Matrix XRS and Corolla XRS along with the Vibe GT. All still have the 2.4L (in the US.) This is perfect timing for Toyota to run their supplies of 2azfe motor down and make room for the new 2.7L engine just in time for the Camry's facelift and several other vehicle launching or using the current 2.4L. Maybe the next gen tc will use the new 2.7L.
