California Highway Patrol and DOT approved HID lights...
 

I've been looking forward to buying a 12,000k Xenon HID conversion kit for my Scion. Anyway to make a long story short a CHP officer came into work the other day and I asked him about the lights I want according to him their illegal if their used on public streets
(Which is pretty damn stupid, I mean where else would you use them? lol) and Off Roading. Anyway he said if their not from the Car company there also illegal and if their not D.O.T approved there also illegal. So my question is how do you guys do it?

I mean since Scion doesn't make HID kits how am I going to be to buy these with out breaking the law? My cousin a cop said that local police wouldn't give a ____ lol but the CHP would pull me over right away once I get out of town or if they see me around in town.

Suck it up and go for it. that's how everyone gets HIDs.

I don't want to get pulled over and have my insurance rate increase I mean their high as it is lol.

retro stiill illegal. you just have to suck it up. i have 5000k hid so i'm probably in the border line to get pulled over. but when you install 10000k or 14000k then you got more chances to get pulled over because those purple light stands out from the rest of the colors out there.

Hell yes they stand out, but damn their hella crazy.

The real answer is there is absolutely no way to have street legal HID in a tC. Even if you took a street legal projector setup out of a Bimmer or something, it wouldn't be legal installed in a tC. It's stupid but true. If you want to stay out of trouble, pony up the big bag of cash and get a retrofit with nice projectors and most cops will probably leave you alone. If you're going 10000+k, you're just asking for it either way.

if you do get 12000k hid kits, i hope you do get pull over real fast instead of blinding all the oncoming traffic.

rwf is right - the higher color temperatures put out less light than the lower temperatures - they're just filtering more out. Most people that dig the 12000k look also... how should I say this... well... don't know enough to do things correctly and probably will blind you, but it has nothing to do with the color temperature. If you had a nice projector setup and the cutoff was right, 12000k would be less of a hassle than 6000k.

Man, you only need 6K. You are contradicting yourself and I confusing me. You don't want to get pulled over but you want lights that will bring attention to you so you will get pulled over. Sounds like ricer mentality to me. I don't want to see any complaining after you do this and you got caught. I'll laugh.

I have 12,000k and don't blind people, no flashes at me...ever. also haven't been pulled over or anything either.

i have an ebay hid kit and only chose 8k for it's color over 6k. had them for about 6 months and no problems with the cops yet *knocks on wood*

I havent heard of much people being pulled over for having 5000k HID's. I guess if you don't go above 10000k it should be alrite.

Just do it! practically anything you do to a car is illegal in california anyways. Just don't attract attention to yourself by doing stupid things on the street and MOST of the time they wont even notice.

There is already a post on why HIDs blind people and why if you have HIDs you need projectors. As the rating of the light goes higher it produces less visable light. 6000 is More than enough and you are boardering on blue light. 5000 is good not yellow, not blue, but white.
