Default flat bottom panels

so i was reading up on the toyota prius the other day and i found out it has flat bottom panels to increase aerodynamics. well, why not do it to the tC? i know what the bottom of my car looks like and there seem to be air pockets everywhere! esp around the rear bumper.

has anyone done/bought/installed such a thing yet? ive done some research but couldnt find it anywhere... perhaps im using the wrong search words?

i thought i'd ask before i go ahead with my cardboard/duct tape ;)

I understand what you are saying. The prius is like a small mini van to me and probably needs help with aerodynamics. The tc is pretty aerodynamic IMO. What do you use your car for? Track ,auto x, or just street. I can't see a need for that on a DD..

Sadly its been discussed and we have tried to get them made by many aftermarket companies but nothing yet!

won't a DD car need it the most? depending on the distance of the commute, i can imagine using flat bottom panels on the freeway can save mucho gas due to higher speeds?

my buddy and i are in the works of making our own. He made his own for a S2k and it came out real clean. We are just using sheet metal from home depot, We should begin working on it within the next week and I will post up progress pics when possible

actually, the prius has a pretty good drag coefficient, with or without the flat bottom panels. i guess every little bit helps efficiency.

as for me, im planning to do this to my DD, just because im interested and i want to. in theory it should help my mpg and increase performance... def a win-win if you ask me. and if it doesnt work, its all good as i have nothing to lose, really.

a while ago we tried to get this developed: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=129450

but if my memory serves me right, there weren't enough buyers willing to put down their money.

man thats a bummer... i guess no updates since then? for a $180 i would def get that.. even though i'd add on to cover the entire bottom.

ive found some home made ones on a honda forum:

not a bad job at all if you ask me. i'd personally make it a bit neater, and have the area covered before the rear diffuser.. but still impressive nonetheless. i think this will be my winter project once i get my car back.

edit: btw i live just a few miles away from you... gaithersburg here around the kentlands area. you have any pics of your car? might have ran into you a few times ;)

would be interesting to see actual testing to determine whether it helps or not

x2.. the edges look really rough lol i tried to reboot this project with kamispeed a few months ago (since it's been forever since the original thread was created) but i don't think they're really interested in producing it

viper sir, u've got a PM

yellow, they've did some testing with the evo. no hard evidence was shown that these underpanels helped with turbulence/aerodynamics/cooling but they've sworn it helped with the lap times.. here are the threads:

http://features.evolutionm.net/article.php?id=94

http://forums.evolutionm.net/service...der-panel.html

in theory they work, in lap times they work (though better driving/other factors could've EASILY made that faster lap time). im gonna make a mock up during winter break just for the hell of it =P

i dont see it helping too much, performance wise, but if it helps my gas economy that would be great

Just to keep everyone updated, My friend and I have officially started this project. So far I spent a $22.96 on materials needed. Going to get things measured and cut this weekend and hopefully get pictures up as we go along.

^I will see if he can post something up. I priced out some 1/8" rigid abs at about $45 to make something similar to the back plus hardware, etc.

yea i started to do this when i lost my engine covers and talked to dr iso about it because he did the splitter and i bought a sheet of abs i think 3/16 or 1/8 and got it cut out just havent got around to mounting. this thread kinda sparked my interest to get it done though
