Default HID Questions

I've seen a lot of pictures with HID's and I love how they look but I dont know anything about them. Are there different types of HID's (projectors???) How much do they cost and how hard is it to install them?

there are HID kits that take HID bulbs, and put a conventional bulbs' base on (like H3, 9006, H4 bases). Then there is true HID which uses a D2S base or D2R base.

HID's need some kind of focusing or they glare like hell. If you put HID's into a conventional halogen housing, the different shape of the HID bulb causes the glare. Using either projector optics or reflector optics, the HID bulb output can be focused to a straight horizontal line with no glare above the cutoff.

an HID kit costs anywhere between 100-200 dollars. in order to have a proper HID setup, you need to retrofit OEM projectors and use OEM equipment. this can cause upwards of 700 dollars depending on equipment choice.

installation isnt that hard. run a wiring harness, mount the ballasts, etc etc etc. should only take an hour or so.

Different colors for different temperatures - you can get anywhere from yellow to white to blue to purple - and others - really bright - no real need for my high beams since i got my oznium.com kit - works awesome - looks awesome!

alright, here's some info for ya..

Projectors are a type of lens. They are round and clear and are often seen on bmws, etc. There are even aftermarket projector headlights on ebay which look alright.

Our headlights are not projectors. They make light by shooting off the chrome reflective housing and reflecting it onto the road. This is the difference between projector and reflective headlights. Projectors are pretty much better because there is almost no glare, whereas reflective lights don't shoot as straight of a light beam.

If you want HIDs you should get an HID kit. It will include everything you need to install them on your car. Our headlight bulbs are 9006, so get an HID kit in 9006 size in whatever color you want.

To install you have to take out the stock bulb out and put the HID bulb in. Then you have to connect the wires however the kit is setup. The kit will come with ballasts which are NEEDED for HIDs. You have to find some place in the engine bay (basically anywhere you want) to mount these ballast (little grey or black boxes) with zipties. You have to make sure they are mounted close enough to the headlights as obvisouly you need to put the bulb in the headlight...

Hopefully that made sense, if not post up your question or PM me or do some searching...

I don't want to get projectors either, too much money.

Is it really that bad without the projectors? Any pictures showing the difference between one with projectors and one without?

Yes. Turn on your high beams. What you see will become your low beams.

I'm sorry, but after watching a TV show on improper HID use (name of the show slips my mind) I refuse to buy an HID kit without a projector housing. So far, the only way to get a proper setup is via retrofit.

Do you guys think I should just buy the kit and install them without projectors? Any suggestion on a good kit?

Thanks

no projectors = glare = ____ing people off = possible fix-it ticket from the local PD.

I actually have HIDs without the projector.... retrofit in progress maybe... i have to weigh my options.. but I think the glare isn't that bad.. I have not been flashed or anything with them in.. I have actually gotten flashed more with my original stock bulbs in... but to each their own...
i have question tho.. i have a 9006 hid kit.. and if i want to change to the h1s.. do i need to buy a new HID kit or can I just switch the blubs..
thanks guys and gals

Yeah, im afraid of getting pulled over too. I think im just going to go with the Sylvania Silverstars. Anyone running those bulbs? How long do they last? Is there a chance that they will burn my harness?

if your going to buy just an aftermarket bulb, dont buy silverstars, spend the extra cash and buy PIAA, thats what i have its the best you can do without going H.I.D. theres no chance of burning your harness with them ive had them for over a year no problems, but im thinking about going HID soon

you don't have to worry about getting pulled over, i mean i live in CA and i follow cops with no projectors they don't care they prolly think it comes standard anyway like all other highend cars

Bah everyone take some chill pills about HID's on stock headlights. The glare is very minimal you could always adjust your angle, I know its not legal but I have yet to be flashed, or stopped.

It was a highly strung out exaggeration. But I still think HIDs in halogen housings are lame.

it's not even just the glare, a projector evenly distributes the light.
