Rear Hatch rattle gone NO JOKE!!!!!!
Okay long story short after screaming and kicking and saying that if they dont fix it this time because its the 5th time the car is in i am getting a lemon lawyer they fixed it.
Its a really simple fix. All they did is replace the bumper stops on teh rear hatch with a slightly bigger one. When I say bumper stops its the ones by the latch not the ones on teh side that have a big bolt on them. They are tiny circle ones that land exactly on the two screws that are holding the trim piece by the latch hook. I will post pics later on tonight when I get home.
ITs all about Longo Scion They really take care of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took mine to the dealer for the first time to get a moonroof rattle and hatch rattle checked out and to get my oil changed and they fixed all the rattling the first time over at Big Two Toyota (AZ). Not the greatest dealership in the world, but they got the job done...thank god, when my sub hits nothing rattles anymore.
OKay guys here are teh pics. The top rubber piece that I have marked in red is hitting the yellow marked thingy on the bottem thus making the noise. Thats what they replaced on mine on both sides and its gone. The way they found out which the pics dont really show its they inked all the parts that could touch and found out what was touching. Any questions feel free to PM me.Thanks..

Yeah that makes sense.. awhile ago i remember posting pics (thanks rivulent) about how i put foam tape on the stoppers (on left and right sides) to stop my vibration.. this fix makes the same kind of fix, just a little more permanent.. thanks for the info!
Great post and pics. I have read so many "fixes" to this problem that I hope this one really does it and it is a cheap fix. I thought Longo indicated it was the struts and that is what the official TSB is supposed to fix (hatch rattle). Now Longo is saying it is this simple rubber stop and not the struts??
Could you tell us what part # this rubber stops are? Looks like they just have a screw holding them in place. Until I get, I have placed some foam tape over the part you circled in yellow. Will test out.

I was about to post a new topic about this but, I caught this one first.
I also managed to FINALLY quiet my hatch this weekend. I'm also the freak that put felt all over anything that could possibly rattle in the back of the car. The thread is here:
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...er=asc&start=0
Page 3 has some good stuff.
Anyways, friday the car got the TRD struts, springs and sway bar and the rattle got a hellva lot worse but, in it getting worse I was able to pinpoint it. It's something in the right hand side hatch strut assembly. When I took off the strut the rattle was gone, put it back and rattle returned.
It looks to me like the strut on the right side might be too long and what we're hearing is the strut bottoming out ever so gently as the car flexes. It might also be limited to a range of cars where the factory got out of spec struts.
However, yes, there's a however, I managed to quell the rattle by putting wheel bearing grease on the ball joints the strut attaches to. It went from constant rattle to no rattle after doing just that.
Now, this leaves us with two scenarios, the strut being out of spec in which case adding longer bump stops like longo did prevents the hatch from closing a smidge more than it did and it does not make the strut bottom out. Or, the ball joints need some lube.
I'm just glad at this point that it's isolated although I would like the official TSB to come out in case it is the strut it's self and replacing it is the real solution. But, I might have my dealer RMA the strut anyways and get a new one to see what happens.
Oh and don't try tightening the bolts that hold the strut mount to the body of the car, they're real soft and you'll bust the heads off them if you try. Thank $diety for EZOuts.

Ok, I'm convinced it's the shock. It rattled as I was leaving work so I drove to the dealer and told them via process of elimination (take shock off rattle goes away, put shock on rattle comes back) I think it's the shock. The service advisor agreed and wrote up a RO right there to replace the shocks (they trust me, I go there for all my services and I took it there for the lowering job. Oh, and I showed them my expired ASE card).
Now, I'm convinced it's the shock because when I got home I opened that hatch and then brought it down to almost closed and put my ear by the shock and wiggled the hatch side to side gently and the damn rattle was coming from the shock right where it mounts to the lower ball joint. It's the same exact sound. I tried putting pressure on the shock where it mounts to the ball joint but it did not stop the rattle so I doubt it's the shock not fitting correctly to the joint but rather something with the shock it's self.
I looked through crazytc's posts and saw that there is a TSB now to replace them so I'll tell the service advisor about it just to tie up any loose ends even though they are replacing the shocks under warranty.
I'm aware that replacement of the shocks did not cure crazytc's rattle but, I'm certain it's coming from the shock and specifically the lower part of it near the mount. If replacement does not fix it then there's a design flaw in the shock. Why it's specific to the right hand one is beyond me.
I imagine the fix of the bigger bumpers is to keep more tension on the hatch and either reducing it from flexing too much or it puts more tension on the shock and stops the rattle that way. A good workaround and if the shock replacement does not fix it one I will explore and be happy with long term but, I think the core of the issue is the shock.
