Weird noise while driving?! wtf? Help!!

Hey all,

ive noticed on the freeway , while driving at 80 mph, there is a whistling/ rattling noise coming from the dash area. im not really sure where the noise is coming from exactly. But yeah, i took it into longo toyota like 2-3 times already because of the damn noise i hear. They cant seem to replicate this problem because 80 mph is not legal so they cant really test it. The technician tried to replicate it cause i told him to just push it and go 80mph. He did but the noise didnt happen again .

WTF?

also i noticed this noise only comes when im driving at 80mph in hot temperatures. Around 80-90 degrees.

So im pretty much screwed, i dont know what the problem is and the techs wont find out what the problem is because of the speed limit. Anyone have an idea what the noise is and where its coming from?

are you going slightly downhill when the sound occurs?

Scion626Blk Aug 11, 2007 03:03 AM

yeah i believe so.

mcheng08 Aug 11, 2007 03:07 AM

so yea, that happends to me also, and not sure what that is :nails: :nails:

JeiTee Aug 11, 2007 03:37 AM

watching...same thing happens to me, right when i hit 80mph...anyone figured out what it is? i thought it was the sidemirror or something on the driver side....

Scion626Blk Aug 11, 2007 03:57 AM

im trying to get to the bottom of this. my last visit to the dealership the tech said it might be turbulence. but i think something isnt sealed right.

SOMEONE FIND OUT!

mcheng08 Aug 11, 2007 04:00 AM

because this doesn't happend all the time it will be a little difficult for the techs at toyota to replicate, and also they would have to take your car on the freeway going 80 :nails: :nails:

Scion626Blk Aug 11, 2007 04:04 AM

yep. i went with them to take my car on the freeway. No replication at all. I was pretty damn ____ed.

Keep in mind 80 is past the speed limit so the tech might or might not want to exceed this. grrrrrr. i think we're screwed. i dont think its anything serious. Just really annoying

mcheng08 Aug 11, 2007 04:09 AM

sounds like a nasty grinding sound/rubbing sound

Scion626Blk Aug 11, 2007 04:13 AM

really? its actually a whistling noise. like the air is causing it or something. now im even more confused

mcheng08 Aug 11, 2007 05:22 AM

this only happends when the ac is on and going down hill

beerrunninthetc Aug 12, 2007 01:15 AM

I notice my 08 doing this to around 80-85. i was checking a/c and everything it sounds like a whining/whistle/siren almost gets very annoying. I am sure it is wind noise. Mine is coming from driverside somewhere in front of/in dash.

iKONA Aug 12, 2007 02:07 AM

Well how about this. The whistling is the air filter sucking in a large amount of air to keep up with the amount of fuel being let into the cylinders. The rattling might be the intake rattling due to turbulence. (80 mph you will have turbulence)

Ive driven up to 130 and had turbulence, no rattling, but whistling yes because of the intake.

Scion626Blk Aug 12, 2007 09:34 AM

hm...i spoke to one of my other friend who owns a tc. doesnt seem to have the same problem with the noise...

but yeah...is it something to worry about?

beerrunninthetc Aug 12, 2007 12:46 PM

Possible. But ive never had an intake that whistles when doing 80. or rattles from from turbulence its pretty solid there.

Question to others.

I have the TRD CAI do the rest of you? AND Does it do this to others that do not have CAI?

jconner Aug 12, 2007 04:49 PM

i have this same whistling noise, usually above 70mph and it dosen't always happen. I have an appointment to have it looked at on Tuesday but i'm probably going to cancel so i can go make some extra money because I know they won't be able to duplicate the sound.

sdtcqueen Aug 12, 2007 05:04 PM

Yeah its just the air filters I notice it everytime im heading up the 8 west from the desert going about 80-85 with my ac on full blast( its 120 degrees). I was told by the dealer to just turn up my music and thats what I do becuz theres no solution.
