What's the deal with carbon fiber?
No one does it the way it's supposed to be done anymore. People use to replace various components with carbon fiber, notably body parts which were then painted so that the car looked like it did before yet was now much lighter. I'm not sure when the LOOK caught on, but down the line, people started replacing with carbon fiber and doing it as more of a style than an actual performance upgrade... probably starting after cars didn't weigh as much as a semi truck.
most people do it for the look, some do it for the weight. whatever reason you do it for, it still saves you weight. C/F has been used forever, however it has always been painted...if i get C/F i will most likely paint it, just cuz i have a black car and c/f looks faded if i dont
i got this mag with a civic in it that was 95% cf. my eyes stay busy lookin at it, lol. its also strong. this is y if it brakes, the shards r sharp enough to flatten a tire. cf started out being used on military aircraft, then in auto racing, commercial use came in around early 90s i think, for cars, bikes, bicycles, boats, and so on. around the late 90s is when the unfinished look became popular and clear coating over gel coating began. if i had cf body work on my enduro kart when i was racing, i wouldnt have had puctures in the nose of it. thats trade mark fglass 4 u.
