Hello!

My name is Cory and I just signed up today! I purchased an 07 tC with 145,000 miles on the clock a couple months ago, and a little over a month after ownership the oil light would come on for half a second if I were to brake too rough. I checked the dipstick and it was dry! I was naive and uneducated on the oil consumption issue for the 2AZ motors 07-09. I am burning a little over a quart of oil per 900 miles. The engine runs smooth and has no further issues. Can an engine swap be done from a newer model? Could I swap the 2AZ for a 2AR from maybe a 2012+ tC? Thanks in advance! Sorry if this is a dumb question or has been asked before- I know nothing about cars!

Yes, an engine swap can be done. You'll just need to change the engine, transmission, ECU, motor mounts and probably half a dozen other things that I can't think of right now.

Is it worth doing, no.

You have two real options. Keep an eye on the oil level and keep adding oil or have the pistons and rings replaced with updated ones. This is the normal fix for the oil consumption issue. Unfortunately you are out of the 10 year mark to have it done under the factory extended warranty so you would have to be out of pocket for the repairs.

I will look into the updated piston/ ring repair. What is a ball park range $$$ for this repair?

From what I remember it was over a couple grand for most people who paid out of pocket to get theirs fixed before the TSB.

That's my problem. The darn thing started consumption a month after its 10th birthday. It's only burning a quart every oil change so I'm gonna pull the plugs, soak the pistons (and hope I don't get hydro lock.)

New here and was going to ask the same question actually... The cost of replacing pistons. I'm looking into buying an 07 with 40k miles. Not to hijack this thread though, can anyone point me in the direction of the part number for the pistons, trying to get a ballpark figure on parts and labor separately. Trying to see if it's worth buying the car or not as I'm trying to save money not lose it.

I actually am going through the oil consumption as well but will be fixing it myself being I am an ase certified and Toyota factory trained tech. Will be happy to help however I can.

I never did the piston soak because I might have shorted the previous oil fill. I guess counting to four gets more challenging as I age.

I added a catch can to see if at least some oil is blowing past the pcv valve and into the intake. I only got a couple of ounces in the can, not even close to what I thought I was short at last drain. On a positive note, low rpm acceleration seems more responsive. May be due to less detonation.
