AW header install help

i can't get to the bottom left bolt/nut by the altinator (spelling). how did you guys do this?

acasanova 07-17-2005 12:16 AM

Hey Matt, i had my header installed by the dealer so i cant provide you with sufficient information. I know Mattytc had installed his and so did a couple of other guys. Im sure they will get in contact with you shortly. I do however know that the stock bolts might be too short to replace on the stock bracket and the alphawerk header bracket. I recommend same guage screws stainless longer by about a quarter to half an inch. Mine came off from vibration and stress partly because they were too short. Had the dealer replace them with longer ones now probs yet.. and im sorry i couldnt be of much help. If your car is on a jackstand i dont see why you dont have access to the screw ,oh wd40 it use proper size wrench maybe tap it with a small hammer(the wrench) to losen it up after wd 40.

the alternator is in the way on so i can't get a socket on it, and i can't get a open ended or box wrench on there because of the stupid lip on the stock header.

PoizentC 07-17-2005 03:11 AM

took me a little while but I was able to use an open end...just try different angles at getting the wrench in there

Did you try a closed end wrench that has a slight angle to it? Kind of like a small bend but it's still straight. On 1 end it's 12mm, the other end is 14mm. I think I used that one. I never had any problems removing it so I dunno.

Souljah347 07-17-2005 03:37 AM

i tried a ratching closed ended wrench that bends at the end (not really sure how else to discribe it).

I hope by lid you dont mean the heatshield, that has to go first.. anyone else we need a BUMP.. :tap:

Souljah347 07-17-2005 01:01 PM

lip, not lid :P. if you look on the stock header, on the bottom left bolt, there is a lip on the left side of it.

falcon9094 07-17-2005 02:21 PM

you should be able to get it off with a small open end 12mm it take some time but you can do it. I have take off the stock header and pu it back on so it is possible to get a 12mm in there just have patience you have to make little turns

Souljah347 07-17-2005 03:16 PM

i just went out and bought some offset wrenchs and some "s" wrenchs. hopefully they'll work

you might of damaged the sensor when removing it fron the stock exaust manifold

chicago_guy 07-17-2005 09:37 PM

what do you mean by safe mode?

Souljah347 07-17-2005 09:47 PM

i can't rev past like 2.5k it feels like i hit a rev limiter or something

falcon9094 07-18-2005 01:09 AM

I have no clue how to help you and i busted my o2 sensor on the removal and have had a cel ever since and never went into safe mode, did you remember to hook every thing back up

chicago_guy 07-18-2005 01:15 AM

if you did not plug the AF sensor harness back in, this is why you might have this prob. or if you did strip the af sensor and did not plug the header with a cap this might be it also. take a pic of your bay so we can see what you are talking about

Souljah347 07-18-2005 01:45 AM

i put the stock manifold back just to make sure it wasn't that. i'm taking it to the dealership tomorrow and see what they say, thanks for all the help, i'll let you guys know what went wrong when they tell me. i have a feeling the o2 sensor may have gotten messed up.

hahaitzskippy 07-18-2005 03:17 AM

there are 5 studs on teh engine block which need to be tightened

as for the bottom mounts. most people i know with the headers only mounted the passenger side on. (since there are to mounts at the bottom, driver and passenger side).

and i've driven 5000 miles with it with out problems.

Lol my bad.. hmm was a bit late not enough sleep too much reading ..lol excuses :) Anyway just got to read your posts what happened? Car running on Safe mode... Hmm like the other guys say take it to the dealer even if they charge you it is the only way to fix the issue. Try to leave everything stock.
