Default Cold Air Intake cause Check Engine Light..

Hi, I did Search for the cause for this and I found some stuff and did that but the CEL light came back on.

I have an 08 manual tC. I bought a BOmz racing CAI and put it on this past weekend. while I was putting it on I took the ECU fuse out because I had read that this is needed to be done to let the ECU "learn" that the CAI is there. I get it all put back together and drive around
for the weekend (probably 2 hrs total) with no problem, but yesterday on my way to school the CEL came on so I took the ECU fuse back out again to let it reset, kept it out all day and when I put it back in the light was still on. Once I got home I unhooked the battery for about 45 mins,
once hooked back up the light was off. Drove it last night (30 mins or so) and to school this morning with no problems at all. well on my way back home just a few minutes ago the light comes back on.

I have checked everything that I touched while I had it apart. I'm wondering if anyone knows what I need to try next or if I need to just take it to the dealer (still under warranty)?

well the only thing that would cause the CEL would be the MAF sensor either it probably got dirty some how.....other then that CAI wouldnt cause a CEL unless a sensor is dirty or malfuctioning...

They sell MAF sensor cleaner. It's about the same as brake cleaner, but safe for your MAF sensor. I had the same problem, and it worked for me.

lol It's a metal tube with a filter slapped on the end... But if you feel like throwing away the extra $100, go for it.

You guys are all tools, the 07, 08, 09 tC's all use a specific MAF sensor that when put in the wrong size pipe will cause a Check Engine, learn your stuff before u go around saying stuff that's not true

*To the original poster... the BOmz Intake pipe is 2.75 and the flange to hold the MAF is another like 2-3cm and this put the MAF outta range, you need a 2.5 inch INNER DIAMETER pipe.

I have an 07 with a BOmz. I had a CEL light right when I put it on. I cleaned it with MAF cleaner. No problems since... The little rubber gasket that's stretched around the base of the MAF was a little difficult to fit into the mounting block, but I wet it a little, and it slid right in.
My friend got the same one I did, and he kept getting a CEL. I looked at it, and he didn't have the MAF all the way in. I did the same to his, and no problems... The filter that they come with is another story, but nothing a quick trip to Pep Boy's won't solve.

First make sure there's no air leaks anywhere from the MAF to the throttle body.

Second its probably a P0101 which means not enough air is going pass the MAF. computer will fix that after a few miles. cleaning the MAF is always a good idea.

Just make sure u do it right.

I checked everything and everything looks good, I'm gonna check on getting some MAF cleaner this weekend and doing that.

If that doesn't fix the problem though, are there any other solution I should try?

Cleaned the sensor this after noon. After about 23 miles of driving the CEL came back on. Drove it the rest of the night to like 60 and its still on.
Dang, guess I'm gonna sell this on eBay and buy something else.

also, when installing a CAI, or just about anything on the car, you don't pull the ECU fuse, you disconnect the battery to prevent the possibility of shorting the car out. doing this resets the ECU anyway, so pulling the fuse for the ECU is unnecessary unless you're clearing a CEL.

Hey, I just recently bought a BOmz Racing Cold Air Intake and I am having the same issue. The Check Engine Light, But I didn't disconnect the ECU.
I just unplugged the battery. I tried cleaning the sensor but no luck. I mean the car runs great, doesn't sound for anything to be wrong.

Anyone know what I could do.? Thanks.

The eBay Intake is the problem, do your tC a favor, sell it and buy a quality intake specially designed for the vehicle. If you haven't learned it yet, you get what you pay for when it comes to eBay crap.

^^ to be honest it depends on the year it is installed on. i have noticed that the 07+ tC seem to have this issue a lot. with BOmz intake at least most of my friends around that i know that have the BOmz on 07+. but i have had mine on my 06 for almost a year now and never had a CEL ever.
It's just the pipe size on the new model tC's. its just how the MAF sits on the pipe on the 07+. like he said you do get what you pay for. which is way its not the greatest quality. but it gets the job done for the price.

but if i was you if you still don't want to spend a lot of money and keep a good intake if you have a 07+ tC. sell the BOmz and pick up a Raceland Intake. Seem to be pretty decent and don't cost a lot.

Interesting, well I would say thats good news! Lol, I guess some cars are far more picky than others. I wonder if elevation would come into play causing a CEL?
Higher elevation, with the increased pipe size would definitely make the system work overtime.

I don't know what it is, its got something to do with the inner pipe size I believe. Cause my friend went from BOmz to Raceland that was having issue. and hasn't had a issue since.
Basically I guess the BOmz is kinda made to fit all. So pipe size is to big for the MAF I'm guessing.

Oh I agree, I had a BOmz Intake on a 97 shaty saty SC2, sucker threw CEL's left and right after the install, removed it and placed the stock box back on, and no more CEL's.
