DIY: Remove A/C + Includes Shorter Belt Size Needed

DIY: Remove A/C + Includes Shorter Belt Size Needed

Mission: Remove Air Conditioning & Components

Pros: Shorter Belt = Quicker Revs/Acceleration, Decrease Drag On Engine (Like a Lightweight Pulley), Weight Reduction (Condenser, Compressor, etc.)

Cons: Not Recommended For EXTREMELY HOT Climates

Time: Approx. 1.5-2.0 Hours

DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY REPERCUTIONS THAT MAY RESULT FROM THIS DIY-PERSONAL INJURY OR MECHANICAL!!!!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 1

Release compressed gas from A/C lines. Unscrew green cap near back left of engine bay-Line is attached to the A/C Compressor. Do this by taking a screw driver and release gas like you would from a tire. Place a towel over screw driver and hand to prevent gas from spraying into eyes and air.

Step 2

Remover front bumper. If you don’t know how to take your front bumper off, I would not suggest you attempt this modification.

Step 3

Unbolt condenser lines that run up and down the engine bay. Located on the front behind crash bar in front of radiator. Remove or cut coolant lines from A/C compressor that run from engine bay into cabin.

Step 4

Unbolt the compressor itself from the engine block. Held on by only 4 bolts – Should be relatively easy to get at these bolts. Once loose, the compressor should start to fall right out. Only thing that will hold it up will be the serpentine belt. A pull here and a pull there and it will pop right out. Unclip the harness and wire connected to the compressor and pull out of engine bay.

Step 5

Unbolt the bolts on top of radiator support. Pull up on the support that runs across the front on the engine bay. This will allow you to slip the condenser from in front of the radiator out of the engine bay.

Step 6

Ok, now this is where normally you would have to get under the car and try and measure the new shorter belt size for your pulley system. But of course, I have already done this for you (Despite all you haters!) You need to purchase a 7 ribbed 64.07” serpentine belt. I purchased mine from Car Quest I think it was like $25.

Step 7

Now this is the tricky part! Begin to align the belt along each pulley. Begin to pull it tighter from underneath the car (Best if car is jacked up). I had to take a screw driver and kind of pry it onto the crank pulley. I had a friend pulling on the tensioner but it didn’t work too well.

NOTES:

Unfortunately, I could not include any photos at this time. My computer at home is broke and can only log onto the site from work. This mod was deff worthwhile and pretty much free. Revs and acceleration are much quicker. I hit 6psi @ 3200RPM. Noticeable difference. Would recommend to any one who doesn’t live in the desert. Personally, I didn’t remove the evaporator or any interior A/C components. Any questions, PM me.

lol I am loving this new mod - Getting a little slippage and squeals here and there - May switch to belt size 63 5/8"

bump hows it been working out?

Socal_Shara 02-03-2009 12:14 AM

Dose anyone know how the belt routs if you do these a pic would be grate. I cant use my a/c cuz my open dump is right next to one of the lines and it had to be removed lol

motoxxx87 11-11-2012 06:23 AM

I did the A/C deleted had to change my belt tensioner cuz the 19mm bolt snapped cant tell you how much of a pain that was but the 63 5/8 belt worked awesome good form thanks a lot
