Driving without a muffler bad for the car?

Hey guys, someone recently stole my Injen Exhaust and cut all the rubber hangers, so now I'm riding without a muffler (it sounds horrible too, BTW).

Anyway, is this going to damage the car in anyway until I can afford a new one?

Shouldn't cause too many issues that I know of... except be moderately annoying for a while.

Ace83 09-02-2008 01:47 PM

nope not harmful, just loud and annoying.. haha my spipe is disconnected right now and its crazy loud! im a ricer for now lol

CarbonXe 09-02-2008 01:48 PM

I drove without a muffler for 3 months. Won't do anything other than make noise.

Ace83 09-02-2008 01:50 PM

with my exhaust disconnected on the spipe part, im only gonna be poisoned by the fumes lol

CarbonXe 09-02-2008 01:52 PM

Yeah, I started the car when I pulled my mid-pipe off and wow, lol.

Ace83 09-02-2008 01:55 PM

^^ its like having a huge 2.5 dump tube constantly blowing haha

jackotamo 09-02-2008 02:13 PM

wow that sucks, freakin thieves....

ERIK-TC 09-02-2008 04:18 PM

This is ridiculous! we need to start making a list of all the bad areas that people are having things stolen from so the heads up is giving not to move there.

I can see rims or whatever, maybe a spoiler being ripped off.... but someone cutting off an exhaust?!?!

That's just downright insane

Your all good, should rock it like this though.

That is news to me that you can drive without muffler/pipe etc.
It was my understanding that the motor is tuned to expect some back pressure caused by the pipe and driving without that backpressure will cause valves to burn/overheat and eventually fail.
While I have not seen that on a car, I have personally seen it on a motorcycle with straight pipes. I have also seen pistons burned by too little back pressure. Hi flow pipes do help the motor as stock pipes are very restrictive, but some back pressure is needed.
My personal opinion is that I would definitely recommend against it. You should be able to pick up a stock pipe fairly cheap on the forums or ebay as many have removed them and I would advise that you install one of those rather than ride without.

In SoCal, people steal Catalytic converters! lol! And where I was from before I moved here, people steal sideview mirrors (and just the mirrors--popped with a screwdriver!).

Anyway, people stealing mufflers now, huh? w-t-h! (Sigh.)

a_german_named_hans 09-02-2008 05:44 PM

^^ I hear cats have like platnium or something like that in them that makes them valuable or something.

jurassic1 09-02-2008 05:49 PM

They do. Palladium/Platinum and other lesser valuable ones...amount too small so you'd need to steal a number of them. Oh well. I can understand brand-name mufflers being stolen, but going all that trouble just to steal the cat? Some people are desperate.

CarbonXe 09-02-2008 06:04 PM

A cat is probably worth more as a cat than it is as melted metals.

jackotamo 09-02-2008 07:40 PM

There should be a KoS on thieves :)

tcCALI 09-03-2008 02:34 AM

people are ghetto.

BZinn1 09-03-2008 04:43 AM

People steal the cats to resell.......we get a lot of them stolen off SUVs and such wehre they can jsut lie under it and unbolt it.......sad world we live in today.

indyTC 09-03-2008 12:44 PM

Man we had this problem on campus but it was cats and gps's hahah there was like some 48 stolen in 2 days....Now there is round the clock popo :)
