I have all the equipment, maybe I should have been more specific, I apologize. What I meant was any tips for actual removal i.e. Did you drop the engine or pull it from the top, did you have to remove the transmission before the engine or was it taken as a whole. Thank you again for your input.

Alt F4 and your engine falls right out...
Use the service manual that would be easiest. Step by step ish....

ahh, sorry for my half ___ response, i was on my phone.

anyways, i took the axles out, took the tranny out and then just lifted.

the only real problem was the air conditioning lines and the brake lines that get wrapped around everything, which is why i took the tranny out

the rear mount is a tricky piece though, have fun! this motor is by far one of the easiest motors ive worked with.

I bought an engine lift from Autozone for $150, Harbor Freiight has them even cheaper. Take it out of the top, leave the transmission attached, and unplug the engine harness from the ECU in the glovebox and pull that end of the harness through the firewall into the engine bay. Leave the harness attached to the engine when you pull it, this will save you HOURS of disconnecting sensors.

Only the driver side axle needs a slide hammer to pull the axle. The passenger side has a mounting ring that bolts to the engine under the intake manifold. You will need to unbolt it to pull the passenger axle.

I think that's everything. Once removed, it's very easy to work on. The only special tool needed is a 10mm bihexigonal socket insert (looks like a Torx driver, but more points)

what kind of a response is that? of course there is an exception to everything, that's why i asked WHO and did not state NOBODY has a hoist that lifts a car that high, also how would you get it out? lift and leave on teh ground?

or lift the car and then lift the motor? even then to work on it you're going to want to remove the subframe, the mounts and everything else.

that seems like a lot of unneccessary work....why don't you just lift it straight up out of the car

the only way i can see a under the car removal being reasonable is in a midengine car

Oh, sorry I didn't clarify. The 10mm is actually for the internal head bolts. If you're not cracking the engine open, you don't need it.

Revisiting old thread (yeah I know) and have a question...

Did you mean pop the axles out of the hubs or the trans or just remove them entirely (which I think is what folks do). I'm pulling a 06 and replacing with a 2010 motor within the next two weeks. Been a while sine I've done a fwd car. FWIW, when we pull rx7 engines, we push the ecu harness through the wall and remove it all together. I think there is a total of 7 bolts that get removed before you can swing the motor out with the trans attached.

the longer shaft that toyota uses with the carrier bearing is a pita. I've had to do those twice on my mom's solara because when they start to go, they make an awful hum that sounds like the front end will fall off.
