Gas gauge quit workin, please help

Topic subject pretty much says it all. Anyone know why it would up and start stop working? I just put $30 worth of gas in and the needle didnt move. I tried to restart my car and the needle jumped up like it normally does but then settled back to where I was before I put gas in. Never had any problems before and havent messed with the gauges at all. Anyone else had this problem?

maybe the fuel pump float?
bad resistor for the fuel pump float?

i've had this problem before, but not for a tc. it was an acura mdx...i removed the fuel pump and checked the float, but that seemed fine. so i hooked up a multimeter to check the resistance (move the float to see if resistance changes). turns out the resistor was bad. not too sure if tc fuel pumps are similar. isn't your car under warranty?

I would just take into the dealer they're the ones who could help you the most my sis' '06 Accord had the same problem but with all the gauges so she took it in and got a new gauge cluster
but just make sure to go to a good dealer not one that'll give you crap..oh wait what am I saying every dealer gives you crap.haha

i don't think it would be the gauge cluster because it works on start up during the self check...but yea take it to the dealer. take advantage of your warranty

I'll have to go to the dealer first thing in the morning. Hopefully its an easy fix or something like that.

if it's in the tank, i bet they'd have to order the part. it's a fuel sending unit inside the gas tank. they most likely would have to drain the gas first out of the tank and then put in the part.

I'd be surprised if they could to that on a saturday even if they had the part. But definitely get it checked out! keep us posted.

ok, went to Toyota today and they had me buy a bottle of Techron because they think where I got gas from there was a high sulfur content so the Techron should eliminate that. If that doesnt do it I have an appointment on tues. But hopefully this does it.

so what brand of gas were you getting that caused this?

Diesel gets better mileage than gasoline, try some in your tC.

lol

The brand I bought was Clark. So I willprobably stick with speedway or BP from now on. The Techron did the trick I just drove a 300 mile trip and the gagues work fine. And how does diesel and gas mileage fit into this at all?

BZinn1 10-21-2007 06:32 AM

Please do not put diesel n your car.........it will make it go no more........untill you spend lots of money to fix it.......

the other posters were making a joke! Just that if you had a diesel engine (Which you don't) you'd get better mileage. just a bad joke, that's all

Glad you got it fixed, I tried speedway before, didn't care for it too much, made the idle not smooth. BP worked well. Keep us posted with how either works for you.

LOL! Diesel. Hahaha. I remember when I was younger back in my country, when you stop by a gas station, attendants pump the gas for you. You just have to tell them which one. Self-serve gas was a luxury you can do yourself.

........yes, yes there were instances an idiot would pump in Diesel be mistake  . Then you have to spend more time there to pump out the incorrect fuel!

Nweiz, glad to hear your gauge's workin fine. I'll keep your experience in mind if the same thing happens to me too.....just don't put diesel in your car (I just love that!) :)

You usually cant put diesel in a gas fuel tank. Usually the nozzles are different sizes, with diesel being a larger nozel that wont fit in the tank opening.

Need4Bass05 10-21-2007 03:47 PM

To clear it up, I know not to put diesel in our cars. I guess the tone or phrase I asked the question didnt really come through in typing correctly. Glad it was an easy fix so if anyone else has this problem they can fix it with no headaches.

and thank God for that. a lady once at a gas station asked me why the nozzle won't go into her car, I told her it was diesel and she needed unleaded GAS.

I took your experience and bought some Techron for my new-used 2016 Scion iA that I bought in March (2019). Hopefully it will clean the crud out of my system and my gas gauge will work again. I am an Uber driver and top off my tank at the end of each shift (125-150 miles per day, on average). I’ll update after a couple of tanks of gas. I use Circle K or Quik Trip gas, with no problems before, but who knows?

I know a gas wholesaler who says our local BP, Exxon and Shell stations all get the same gas. According to the wholesaler, there's no brand at the wholesale level. Just reg, mid and high octanes.
