Need Help Removing Driver Side CV Axle

Default Need Help Removing Driver Side CV Axle

Hello fellow tC owners. This past weekend my brother-in-law and I tried to remove the driver side cv axle so we replace it along with the seal. We tried prying with the little room that was available and we even tried going at it by removing the passenger side cv axle and poking at it from the other side. We were able to get it out last year when the cv axle was replaced but we can't remove it this time. I need some help guys. Thanks in advance.

If you have the axle out of the wheel hub assembly, it should just pop out of the trans, unless you didn't install it correctly last time and have the retaining ring boogered up, then you may more problems than you think.

Try attaching whale jaw vise grips and banging the handle of the grips with a rubber mallet. I stuggled getting mine out and this method, literally took 5 mins. The reason it is so hard to get out is because you must overcome the retaining ring.

Use the hammer jack that has claws to latch onto it in the notches to pull. I just did mine today and it was a pain in the ___ for us to find a 30mm 12point socket to get the nut off and find a hammer jack that could fit. Toyota has a proprietary tool that latches onto the notches so you can pull the CV Axle out. It's not simple like other cars where you just use a crow bar and pry it out. It needs that vibration force to be able to pop it out. My boot tore as well and decided just to replace the whole axle all together. Definitely just going to replace the boot next time if that's the only problem to begin with.

Oh and make sure you use the right transmission fluid for manuals or automatics. A lot of the DIY's on here fail to mention the year of the car and transmission type. Pretty much don't use TYPE-IV in '07+ in automatic transmissions and use only WS.

For me I installed an aftermarket cv axle which will be coming off because the car vibrates under acceleration. I just purchased an OEM cv axle because they have counter weights to avoid the vibration while the aftermarket EMPI cv axle I bought did not come with one. In fact 90% of aftermarket cv axles don't come with counter weights and that's why people get those vibration problems.
