Paddle Shifters

Hey guy and girls,

I have a question. I own an automatic 2009 tC but my friends wanted me to get a manual instead. For certain reasons I got an automatic. Having an automatic greatly decreases the performance of a turbo...so instead of getting a manual transmission swap which costs a gripload of money, is it possible to get paddle shifting on my car?

possible.. but itll take alot of money.. esp with the research and dev that would have to go behind it to make it work.. at least id think so.

Completely unrealistic. SST style transmissions have millions in research into them. Its not like you can just do it yourself. You would have to build the transmission from scratch since nothing like the tC has the system.

A manual swap would cost a TON less than designing, developing and building your own transmission from scratch.

An automatic with paddle shifters isnt just an automatic transmission that you go up and down in the gears like you can with the selector on your automatic tC, it uses all kinds of clutches and electronics to control.

Here is a thought to think about... why is it that the xB2's (xB1's also?) have tiptronic and O/D while the tC's don't?

Triptronic is still nowhere near what the paddle shifters cars have nowadays. Triptronic just allows you to shift when you want, but the car will still shift for you if you forget. If the ferraris, porches, bmws, evos, GTRs, Mercedes and so forth, the paddle shifters are a complete shifting system, you can set them so if you dont pull them, they dont shift. Or set them to shift automatically for you.

The xB you wont just stay in the same gear if you never change the gear. Just like in the tC with selecting your own gears on an auto. It will only go NEAR redline if floored when shifting on your own.

I wouldn't say auto's greatly reduce power when it comes to turbos.

Nick06tC 07-03-2008 05:14 AM

They definetely reduce it alot. But more importantly they dont allow you to run as much power because they cant handle it.

what you mean go near readline when selecting your gears in an atuo??

Paddle shifter for the tC probably isnt as expensive. Someone down by where I live has an automatic IS 300. Recently he placed a custom paddle shifter for it. Cost him 1,700. Not bad but if your going to do something that drastic, you might as well get a new car.

But lexus already has a design for paddle shifters for a lexus. Scion does not. And its not just installing paddles, its an entirely new transmission to have it.

Stick to auto and call it a day... Don't let your friends influence you.

Why turbo? Do you plan to take it out the tracks or auto-x? For me, I would not boost unless it were for 1 of those 2 reasons, so basically there is no point of me having a fast car. Just think about it.
