you could just de-power the stock rack. i did this to my other car. basically you open up the rack, remove the rubber seals, all the residual fluid, grease it up and put it together again. then again i did this on a '91 car, not sure if our racks would be as simple

I would assume you could just take the fuse out and it would deactivate the system. It is after all a EPS

when did the tC become electric steering? It's hydraulic on the 05,06, 07s.. haven't seen the 09's myself. Doubt they changed it.

Is it possible to loop the line?

I'm going to attempt to get back there and see if there is any way to loop the lines so that some fluid remains in the rack to keep things lubricated, on one of my old cars I made a breather system and it worked fine, but like the post above, taking out the rack completely and just greasing it up would work just as good, the problem you are really looking at is premature wear from no fluid in there.. only question is how hard is that going to be...

After doing some research, I am not wanting to loop the lines but rather take the whole system out, so has anyone had experience with actually taking out our rack itself? I want to do this and grease it up every now and then..

Also need belt size for running without PS, what is the easiest way to go about this?

uhh taking out rack out will be a _____ with the sub-frame, id just leave in the power steering honestly. No matter how much grease you put in a power rack it will always have more resistance than a manual rack. Your going to feel the rack more without the power steering that you would with it. Your better off just keeping it as it is

Do you think looping the line back in to itsself and adding a breather would help? I mean that keeps fluid in the rack.

He is a link so what some other people do.

^ that one is without the breather system

newer civic

I know our car is completely different but the concept remains the same to keep fluid in the rack. From what I have read its not much different then actually have a PS pump and pulley.

yeah this is pretty much true. you can depower, loop the lines around, whatever, it still wont be as easy as a manual rack, but you will have a better steering ratio.

if you get rid of the power steering pump you need to fabricate an idler pulley in its place.

im running without AC/PS

What is the need for the idler pulley? Could you not just get a smaller belt size?

i think you cant route it right without the p/s pulley,

but yeah you could loop the lines and it will help, but again what feel you gain in de-powering the rack you will get back in the added resistance of the rack fighting you

I just want to get rid of anything unnecessary for track events, but this sounds like too much of a _____ to worry about as of right now.
It would be nice to get rid of all that weight up in front of the car and get steering feedback while doing it.

If you're drag racing the car, you would see a very SLIGHT benefit by removing the power steering. However if you do any other racing, you would actually hurt the performance of the car. Especially if you simply disconnect the power steering and leave the rack, it would make it near impossible to turn without a lot of force. Even upgrading to a manual rack would be a waste since you'd still need a lot of effort to turn the vehicle. And for the fact, 95% of race cars use power steering.

OEM

got fittings for the rack to loop a line with PS fluid

you need to make either a bracket for a pulley where the PS pulley used to be or make a new tensioner. You cannot route a belt without a pulley in the PS spot while using the OEM tensioner
