Default Straight pipe axle back

Just curious who has done this. I realize that I could unbolt the rear section and get an idea of the sound level but the downside is that the exhaust is dumping out under the car so I am curious if the decibles will be lower because of this. I checked on Youtube but can't seem to find a good clip of someone running it like this.

The thought crossed my mind the other day when I saw an older Civic set up this way. This guy was running straight piped all the way though and was WAY loud. There is a guy with a somewhat race prepped STI around my way running it straight piped as well, once again really loud. Just curious how much louder it would be with out the actual muffler on there.

If I end up going this route, I will probably just have it done in 2.5" piping and dumping as an N1. I would order a 9" long x 2.5" slash cut tip to have welded on to the end and paint all the piping black with high temp paint to cover the cheesey welds that will be used (going to keep this baby as cheap as possible).

I just can't see spending $200+ for an exhaust that is not going to add any hp to the car. At the same time I would like a little more sound out of the exhaust. I had thought about using an older N1 canister I had left over from my old Suby but the can is too long and would sit damn near parrallel to the rear bumper instead of looking like an N1 if you will.

If you leave the stock cat, header and what not on, it shouldn't be that much louder. Pull the axle back off and listen to it that way. I have a friend who did this to his Altima (sp?), it sounds nice. His is just a straight pipe where the axle back would be.

When I traded my TRD for stock I had to move my car with no axleback installed. I just had the Tsudo midpipe connected. Sounded pretty mean. Too loud for daily driving though in my opinion.

I've always thought of doing something similar, but instead having a boso pipe welded to the end.

I am assuming this is due to the removal of the resonator as well as the muffler. In my case, I would only be swapping out the axle back. Guess, i will just need to unbolt it to get a better idea of how much louder it will be.

There is also a cost issue. If the cost exceeds $125 to weld up a new pipe and add a tip to it (found a tip on ebay-traight cut flared tip for $12) and you can pick up a full cat back exhaust on ebay for about that price or even an axle back for $75. Granted these are not HKS mind you but at least there would be a muffler at that point.

ended up picking up a used Greddy Ti axleback. To my surprise it is quite loud. Sounds good mind you but rather loud for only being an axle back. I was riding behind a guy the other day with what I believe was a Race Land set up and mine was considerably louder. Not sure how long this thing will stay on the car as the wife is not pleased and I must admit it can get a little annoying while rolling down the highway.
