tC 5 Spd won’t shift into gear while engine is running

I apologize in advance if this was already answered but I’m new to this so please bear with me.

Scion tC 5 Spd 2006

I am able to start the car in first gear , then once i shift into neutral it will not shift into any other gear.
It does shift through any gear while car is off but not while car is running!!

Also just had my slave cylinder replaced but i had this problem before and after!

It also doesn’t do it all the time, sometimes it’s fine, then one day I’ll go to get in my car and it won’t shift into gear!!

I'm stumped!!

Please help!!

If it's only sometimes, I'd think that rules out synchros. The 1st gen tC is known for having master cylinders go out. Master cylinder is weaker than the slave on this model. I just did mine. I couldn't find any aftermarket brands that were an upgrade to the OEM part (Aisin).

I will have my mechanic check that thanks you so much!!

Sounds like a bad master or slave cylinder. It could also be air in the system and needs to be bled. I had this happen on 3 different cars before. If the clutch is dragging even a little bit the syncros won't let you shift it in gear unless you force it through.

One time it happened on my turbo mustang and it had a Fidanza flywheel with the replaceable friction surface and when my clutch couldn't hold the torque (almost 600 ft/lbs) anymore and started slipping and warped the flywheel surface. It wouldn't totally disengage the clutch after that and could only shift when the engine was off. I'm sure that last one isn't your problem :)
