tC1 5th gear swap

tC1 5th gear swap
Hello everyone! I have just had the pleasure of joining this site. I have read a bunch of the forums about putting a Camry 5th gear into the Scion tC manual trans. All of the forums say that it can be done but never talk about how it works out.
I am doing this for gas mileage, because of the amount of Interstate driving I do. My Scion is a 2006 tC (2.4 motor) and I want to put a 2006 Camry (2.4 motor) 5th gear in it.
Question 1: Do you have to replace both input and output gears? ( one forum talk about only replacing the output gear)
Question 2: With the RPM drop in 5th gear to around 2200RPMs from 3800RPMs at 70mphs how does this effect the car?
Part Numbers for Camry 5th gear 33336-42020, 5th gear driven 33428-42020
for Scion 5th gear 33336-12061, 5th gear driven 33428-42040
Thank you ahead of time for any help.

Don't expect that much drop. The Camry has the same trans as the xB and I run at about 3-3200 @70 mph. The gearing difference just isn't that great between the E350 and E351 transmissions. Here's a link to the E-series transmission Wiki page so you can see the differences. You can get a good drop with the modern Camry transmission but it would require a complete trans swap and custom adapter plate for the newer 6-speed one.

I drive a 2008 tC w/ manual transmission. 3800 RPMs sounds closer to 80mph than 70. I realize that where you commute influences how fast you drive and I can't stand others riding my ___, particularly on the interstate.
That said, a Camry 5th gear won't help much with spirited driving. 3800 RPMs is close to if not triggering your variable valve timing. This increases your horse power to 160 and that's likely what is whacking your MPGs.
When my interstate driving averages 60mph, I average 35 MPGs.A Camry 5th gear (might) add 2 to 3 miles per gallon. But this is nowhere near engaging my variable valve timing. Averaging ~80 MPH might reduce MPG increase from a 5th gear mod, considerately.
Long story short, the 5th gear mod won't pay for itself unless you do the work. Even then, the results may be less than anticipated.
