Default Tranny emergency...please help me. I don't have a lot oftime

I recently was in an accident and had to have a transmission put in the car (Auto)...

Anyway the car is ready today but the guy said when you put it in drive...it doesn't move...unless he puts it in 1st and after it moves, put it back in drive and shifts beautifully...reverse works good btw. he said that the shop that put it in, said our trannies are electronic and it just needs to be driven like that a couple days and it will fix itself. Is this true?! or is the tranny they put in bad?

If anyone has any advice/expertise/help, please share. I've got 5 hours before i go see it and I really need my car...It's been a MONTH now.... and I don't have transportation. I searched and went through 8 pages of tranny related questions before posting. Thanks in advance!

That is false. Do not accept the car or you are going to be stuck with it.

^^^Listen to that!!!!
because what their telling you isn't true!!! Don't fall for the BS... A tranny should work perfect from the minute you touch it, and it won't fix itself! that's like saying: Don't worry your broken leg will fix itself if you continue to walk on it!

You better not accept the car. No matter what they say. If the car doesn't work as it did when it rolled off the factory lines, then something is wrong.

Well I called the Toyota House and the tech there said any new auto tranny would need to be driven approx one day so the computer can "relearn".... He said the transmission has ALOT of electronic components these days that have to readjust themselves. Technology never ceases to amaze me. How bizarre.

the shop the car is at said they would find another one (tranny) if the problem continued for more than 48 hours....god this is aggravating. I guess it wouldn't hurt to at least drive it around for 30-60 minutes and stay close to the shop...urg...

^^That might be the best bet, but i know the Auto tranny has a bunch of electronic components but i don't know if you would have to readjust them by driving the way i figure the whole process should go is: The Shop does the work, then they drive it around for 3-5 min. and if somethings wrong they go back a fix it before you arrive. with out you having to waist your time sitting there! but this is IMO!
Also on the other hand if a Toyota House Tech told you other wise, i would listen.

Then tell them to keep it and drive it for a day, then give it back to you when it works.

hahahaha,,,!!!!!!!!!
SAME THING HAPPENING TO ME>>>
first of all did you have a front end accident?
if you did! your tranny cable was loosen so you need to adjust it.
the tranny cable is near the front mount engine.
I gotta put on 2 to Drive and put back to D but mine never goes to 1!!
I will try to fix it this summer... it is not that hard....
all you have to do is adjust the cable to the right gear!
if it is an experienced mechanic, he should know what he is doing

I sure did. 10K in damage. Went through a damn fence at 90+ backwards without a seatbelt...yeh I know, I regret it big time and am very ashamed of myself believe it or not. I truly am lucky to be typing right now. Sucks too....been driving over 10 years and never been in a wreck before so it's been quite the learning experience. it ripped the tranny mount by force off of the transmission....it was ugly. Hell I'll post before and after pics prolly tomorrow. lol. I almost wanted to cry when i saw my car in the daylight the next day...absolutely awful.

Update: The body shop decided to take it to Toyota to let them fix it correctly. PHEW! Now I feel better about taking delivery tomorrow...after a thorough inspection and test drive of course. :-)

I have no idea how it's not totalled....I bet it's darn close though...9K in damage before they found out about the tranny, tranny mount and wheel damage... so I can only assume that pushed the dmgs past 10K. I am actually going to get it right now. yay! The verdict on the tranny, for those following along, was from Toyota saying "it was a faulty sensor/cable that needed to be replaced"....glad it was that and not something mechanical.

well that's why they took it to toyota...they couldn't figure out the problem after the tranny swap. Turns out it was something easy and those guys fixed it right up.

Now that I've actually driven it today, I'm absolutely amazed how well they did. It looks brand spankin' new. All the body panels line up, everything works, and the paint matches dang good. Can't even tell the wheel was rashed either.
