Default '05 boosted...possible cylinder problems?

I've been searching, cause I read a thread on it a while back, but I'm not coming up with what I'm looking for. So if someone can tell me or direct me to the right thread, I'd appreciate it.

I remember reading that the first batch of tCs that came out had an issue with anything but a very mild boost. I think one of the pistons was blowing out, and it even happened with the supercharger. Does anyone recal anything about this?

There was a guy on here with a sweet Dezod setup, and was autoxing his ride, and he knew about the issue. He waited for it to blow and then rebuilt the engine for more boost.

I found a guy that use to build turbos for Porches and has a bunch of parts right now.
I took him for a ride in my tC and he is just itchen to boost it, so I want to make sure I have this one area covered before I go forth with this.

i don't think that you need to worry too much if you are only doing mild boost, but it you are just replace the pistons and that should be all the protection you need for any stage 1 kit you can buy.

check around, there are a LOT of boosted tc's with stock bottem ends and zero issues and maybe a small handful that have had problems with turbos but not from pistons. usually they have problems like running rich which shouldn't be too hard to fix.

Also - if you are going to replace your pistons you would want to replace your rods also. But there are people running 12lbs boost w/ the s/c and 10lbs w/ the turbo that are having no issues.

Right. That's just it, I don't want to run mild boost. And I've seen plenty of tCs running 10 to 12 pounds of boost (what I'm planning) on stock internals.

But those are '06 models or late '05 models. I got mine in march of '05 so I'm afraid it's one of those early batches that had a specific issue with one of it's cylinders when boosted.

if you aren't going to run mild boost on a daily driven tc, then i would say do the internals.

the cost of upgrading the internals probably beats the cost of a new engine anyday of the week.

anyway, i don't think there would be any differences in engines from early 05 to late 06, only the 07 engine is different, i mean, come on, how long has toyota been making our engine for the camry? scions are loaded with toyota yestertech. all parts and pieces were just made from other toyotas and packaged in a manner that would appeal to us youngin.

since zpi says 10 psi is fine on a daily driven stock tc engine, i wouldn't go beyond that. as for cylinder problems or whatever, maybe they didn't tune it well, or something but i never heard of some kind of early 05 cylinder problems.

so anyway, to reitterate, mild boost means okay on stock engine, but wild boost means be prepared.

Ive bought my tC in Dec. 1st, 2004, I boost 11 psi daily, no problems so far.

The only problems i heard of, was that the bearings for the rods sucked, so you spun a bearing. thats the only thing ive heard so far.

12 lbs and mild boost should not be put into the same sentence......

There were a few spinning number 4 bearing, but not a ton of them. Some boosted, some stock. I think there were some oiling issues going on out there on some. At least that is still my take on it.

Maybe the spun bearing on number 4 is what I was remembering. Thanks for that.

This is my daily driver, and I'm not planning on mad boost every day. I'll probaby run between 8 and 10 daily, but will push up 12 or so at the track.

I just wanted to be aware of any issues that I would not normally have to deal with on any other boosted car.
