Clutch Time

Okay, despite my stocker still holding up like a champ after 10k of boosted mileage at 280 whp, I'm gonna buy a clutch soon. I want to retain as much OEM pedal feel and drivability as possible yet get something better suited for the job than the OEM. I've decided between ACT and Exedy.

I would like to keep a full face disc for longevity and smoothness. I don't race the car. Mostly spirited driving and once in a blue moon, I'll do a 1/4 mile pass.

Any recommendations or advice before I make the leap? Input along the lines of longevity, pedal feel, and prices would make life easy and would be greatly appreciated!

i got the exedy stage 1 and i'm at 303 whp on the ptuning kit.. and its holding up awesome... no clutch burning or anythiing.. i rec.. that

I am boosted as well with the same numbers, almost. I would recommend ACT in a heartbeat. It's the ACT TY4-HDMM and I haven't had one problem with it. STAY AWAY FROM COMPETITION CLUTCH!!! Well, the stage 4 at least. That's what I had before, and well, let's just say I run the ACT now... You can get it for around $400, give or take.

Can't go wrong with Exedy. Keep with Exedy or ACT and you will be good.

I am a BIG fan of the ACT full faced. It's a bit pricey, but overall an excellent piece for the moderately boosted street tC.

clutchmaster stage 3 with an ingalls SS clutchline. feels nearly stock. only time my foot hurts is when holding it in at long lights.

I'm boosted also on stock clutch and Toan at Ptuning said my best bet with a clutch is exedy stage 2 so that's what I went with, just haven't installed it yet so I can't tell you how it feels.

i recommend ACT heavy duty. Personally used one on my old tC. Clutch pedal didn't feel that noticably heavier and it held up to some good abuse!

So Ill be doing the manual swap soon and I think Ive decided on the ACT Mod street disc with HD pressure plate - its the one rated to 390tq. Im just worried - will this hold up ok with around 350whp/wtq? Im building the motor but dont plan on going to crazy - just mid 300's :P

same clutch i run also interested in it can do 350-375ish easily as thats what i'm shooting for. The pedal is definitely harder though, after driving my car with the clutch and getting into a stock vw i almost put my foot through the floor lol.

hey man havnt seen ya in a while, how ya been.

anyways yeah iv installed two of those clutches on a couple of my boys cars, they love em. peddle feel is stiff at first but after adjusting the peddle and a few miles later it gets better.

highvoltage1 01-06-2010 05:52 PM

What yal think about Spec stage 2?

TCpete 01-06-2010 06:34 PM

i prefer exedy or act...

dont get comp clutch... their material is garbage!

08_Scion_tC 01-06-2010 06:43 PM

^ Agreed...

toeveryhour 01-07-2010 03:54 AM

exedy stage 3 here. feels similar to stock. i went with a lightened flywheel also.

Exedy's parent company Daiken does TONS of OEM stuff for the major manufacturers. So Exedy is truly a nice piece as well. Regardless of whom who you choose (to the OP) Exedy or ACT, you are in good hands.

Paul, Any idea on whats up with the act street disk engagment? Does it need a extended push rod, or is it the clutch design?

My friend installed it in his car, And it engages right at the floor almost! Making it diff to shift.

He's tried:

Bleeding clutch
SS clutch line
Adjusting the rod everywhich way
swapping the clutch master cylinder

I havint messed with it myself. But is the OEM throw out bearing he used the cause? Maybe the ACT one is longer?

Thanks
