Thanks guys. I'm new to boosting so I will probably have a bunch of questions. I've been reading up and lurking around this forum section for a long time, so I'm not clueless, but I know there are still plenty of gaps in my knowledge of this stuff.
A tapped oil pan is supposed to be on it's way to me. What would be a good choice for a boost controller? I think I just need something simple. PTUNING has a TurboXS one for $80, will that be fine? |

dont worry justin he forgot to mention he has 550cc injectors...
to the original poster... i would get the ptuning fuel return system,....i maxed out 550cc injectors at 272hp |
have heard great reviews on this manual boost controller too!

That is a nice manual boost controller. But keep in mind wastegate pressure on the Ptuning kit already maxes out factory fuel system (return system needed for more boost). Remember to get injectors too, 550cc or above, and of course engine management.

So default boost level. At this point I only want to worry about what I need to get the kit on the car and working properly. |
I was looking at getting a Hallman manual boost controller before I sold my tC. Sounds like it is one of the best, if not the best, MBC out out there.

D1G1T4L - PTUNING Iowa Style - Coming Soon
MBC works in serial with the stock wastegate, basically it bleeds off a set ammount of boost so that for example if the intake sees 11 psi, only 8 psi makes it to the spring actuator. Because of this, it won't really help with boost creep. I'd stick with stock on the new install until you know the kit's running without problems. Changing boost on a new setup only adds another variable to troubleshoot if something isn't working right. You can always add it later once you know how much leeway you have left on the stock fuel system.
This is what I'm doing on my turbo build. Bought the TurboXS MBC but will be leaving it closed for the first tune until I figure out duty cycle margin on the 8 pound wastegate. |
Oil pan should be on its way.... Have fun with this I did while it lasted :(

Bump! Nearly two years later, the turbo is installed. I didn't post any updates because I didn't feel the need to showcase my xtreme procrastination skillz. :biggrin:
It took me a few more months to select and purchase the rest of the parts, by which time I was teaching which meant working two jobs and having no spare time for a project like this. Then it was summer and I didn't want to put my car out of commission during the nice weather. So last fall I began working on it, doing it in small chunks when I had the desire and the garage was warm enough. In the last few days I've finally gotten everything wrapped up. So now I just a have a few things left before I'm totally up and running:
1. I'm getting a CEL for bad front O2 sensor. I'm running the one that came with the used kit, so I'll swap in my original one and see if it goes away. 2. I need an upgraded clutch. Any recommendations? I'm planning on staying pretty much at the stock boost level for this kit, so something in the 300-400ft/lb range should be fine. I'd prefer to order from PTuning, and have been leaning towards ACT. 3. I need to get tuned. I live in northeast Iowa and there's nothing around here. I was planning on having to go to Chicago. Does anyone know of good tuners around Chicago or elsewhere in the upper midwest? |
