Default Putting together my own turbo kit under $2000

So I've been a member for a little while now and don't have many post, but Scionlife has become my personal library for all things scion for almost the last three years. Anyhow, I just had a few questions about a few things I'm uncertain about.

1) What size turbo is best to go with for making a max of 350hp
I plan on buying a cheap ebay turbo and having local shop rebuild it with garret internals for $350. I also am going to run untuned for about 2 months(only if i can keep my a/f ratio steady enough and not boost over 5-6 psi

2)Injector size, thinking 440cc(eventually running 8-10 psi)

3)How long the stock clutch will hold out on 6 psi (Car has 32,000 onit right now)

4) Can't think of anything else right now, but I'm sure I will soon-- (chime in)

1. ebay turbo will be 250 plus then 350 u better of buying a real garrett off the back.

2. i would say 650 and a fuel pump for 350 untuned i dont recommend it soo i wouldnt do it

3. stock clutch will die

4. do a little more research and all ur questions will be answered

1) Well the turbo I was looking at costs $125 shipped. I mainly just want the core.

2) I also should have been a little more clear when I wrote the 350hp, I didn't mean that I was going to run untuned making 350hp. I meant that once i'm tuned I want to be able to have the option of producing more power.

3)Yeah i figured

if u have under 2000 u can get a full kit for way under that used that will be better than making 1 especially if its ur first time boosting u should get a kit soo u can learn a lot more. but thats just my 2 cents.

Here's the basic breakdown of what I'm thinking of getting

1) T3/T4 a/r 63

2) Godspeed 2.5" TC intercooler kit

3) Tial 38mm wastegate with 5.8 psi spring

4) Injectors, still waiting for more input

5) Megan turbo manifold, downpipe and s pipe

6) Aem wide band gauge kit

7) autometer phantom boost gauge

Greddy type rs bov

9) Glowshift gauge pod

10) AN fitted oil lines made by brother-in-law

11) Vacuum block

12) Clutch and flywheel - (still need input)

13) Aem fic A.S.A.P

Also--where is the correct placement for the maf sensor, cs I've seen them after the bov closer to the tb. I also have seen them in the intake side of the turbo inlet, so what gives?

I wouldnt boost over 4 psi on the stock ecu. At 4 psi ull still have a half way decent afr. It should hold around 12.5, which is pretty high for boost, but better than 14.0 or leaner. Best thing to do is grab urself a decent 50 trim, at least 550cc injectors, and def an fic. U will thank urself and ur car will thank u for it too. 440 injectors will max out quickly. Im runnin 550's on 8 psi and im around 80% injector duty cycle. And last but not least, make sure u do a lot of research and than get a good tune.

Yeah me too, my brother-in-law has an IC kit from godspeed on his mx-6 and the fitment is perfect so I'm hopefull. As far as the clutch goes, all I have to worry about is the cost of the parts. I am completely willing and capable of doing the clutch myself so that will save me some benjamins. It helps having air tools and a brother-in-law that has every tool that I can think of. I just did the clutch on my mother's 2006 hhr and that was a B____, I had to drop the whole subframe to move the tranny. It took me around 10 hours to complete the job.

any suggestions on a clutch?

2 years and over 20k miles now at 6 psi with 440cc inj's. While this works well the 440s are too small for more boost and the ECU can't manage larger inj's without a piggyback.

Ok, so 440's are what I plan on getting since I won't be able to get it tuned for a bit

Good choice, IMO. It's a lot safer than running boost with the stock inj's and you can always upgrade to larger inj's later on. If possible, install the inj's before the turbo so the ECU can trim them. You'll have some roughness, hesitation, CELs and possibly even some stalling for the first few miles but after about 100 miles of mixed driving your LTFTs should be fully set.

Make sure that you have a good MAS setup since you won't have a piggyback to tune around MAF measurement error. 2.5" ID pipe would be ideal but 2.5" or 2.75" OD AL tube should also work okay.

OEM MAS pipe = 2.5" (63.5mm) ID
2.5" steel pipe = 2.5" (63.5mm) ID
2.5" AL tube = 2.34" (59.5mm) ID *
2.75" AL tube = 2.6" (66.0mm) ID *

* Assumes fairly typical 2mm wall thickness

A smaller MAS pipe will increase measured MAF and a larger pipe will reduce it. I'd use 2.75" AL tube for a draw thru setup and 2.5" for a blow-thru. Good luck.

will the stock 370's handle 4 psi? If so I'm gonna use the money reserved for the for the 440's for the clutch unless you think the clutch will handle 4 psi for a while.

just so you know the Glow shift is probably the worst gauge pod made. i had it and it fit terribly and there were gaps everywhere.

the one from gaugepod.com fits well from what i saw from what i saw on my buddies car.

how big is the turbo you are going to be running? untuned i wouldnt go bigger than a 50 trim at low boost. i ran a evo III 16g untuned and it ran fine.

That size turbo will probably take you to 300whp at higher boost but not much over that.

Yeah I'm going with the 50 trim, I just need to know if my stock clutch will hold out for any amount of time on 4 psi. Even if I have to drive and not get into boost much. Were you running stock injectors while untuned?
