Does it matter if I use coaxial or component speakers?
I have a 2005 TC, and want to upgrade the speakers (a couple are shot). From what I understand there are 4 speakers, 2 in the back and 2 in the doors....all 6.5 inch or close to. I thought I read somewhere that you were supposed to use one type of speaker for the front and one for the back, such as coaxial or component. Can I use one type for all the speakers? Any thoughts on this, and explanations behind this? Thanks!
Components give you better sound because the tweeter will be closer to your ears so you'll hear the highs better. The woofer will be down in the bottom of the door as usual. So you can hear it better and its more clear. Also I've heard that the low notes from the woofer can make the tweeter get more distortion when its turned up on coaxial... but that was a while ago. Dunno if that still holds true

So components are the packages I see that have a tweeter that comes with it? I am guessing you just mount it (the tweeter) somewhere up high, near the window, and run the wire down the side of the window area? I have no idea how to do that stuff.
Ahhhh ok. I got it! Does anyone have any recs for speakers? I am trying to go budget if possible. For example, in the link below. They seem to have really good reviews? Any other ideas for budget stuff? Thanks for all the help!
They seem to have a good site. So, the crossovers that come with the component sets....I would imagine my stock TC does not have these. How do you hook these up (connections), and where do you place them in the car?
Any examples of decent coax/components that are a good budget? For example I found some Polk Audio Coax Db651 for 59.99 at Amazon; they got great reviews. Whatever comes to mind, just budget(ish) minded. Throw some links my way if possible. Thanks!
awesome....I would imagine they are better than the stock speakers that come with the TC...especially after using them for 6 years. So, as far as the DB651 speakers....I only saw the coax ones. Is there a corresponding set for components?
I believe these are the matching components: http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-DB6...dp/B000P0R6LQ/
When I bought them, two sets of the 651s were less than one of those so I didn't bother with the components.

Awesome, thanks. I bet they still sounded better than the stock speakers huh? How does yours sound with all coax? I am sure you still have the tweeters in the doors, so you kind of have an extra set of tweeters up front?
Cool. Doing it that way would def be cheaper. I just want to make sure that everything sounds good. I am guessing the extra tweeter really does not matter? By the way, were the speakers easy to install? Just take off the panels and replace? Someone mentioned something about using weather stripping behind the speakers to make a better seal? Also, I would imagine you don't use the grilles that come with them? Any experiences would be great. You have helped a lot, thanks!
No problem! The extra tweeter doesn't make a huge difference. The speakers are relatively easy to install, just take off the panels, drill out the rivets in the front and unscrew the screws in the back, and install the new speakers with the plastic brackets they provide. I didn't use baffles behind them, but you could. No need for the grilles though.

You want to decouple the speaker from the door. You can use butal or sounddeadner or even some sort of rubber. The tc door is pretty rattle free from the start.
Cutting boards make a good all weather speaker mount if you have jig saw use your old speaker as a template.
Coax's in the the door work out pretty well. Without going active you don't have to compensate for the tweeter and midbass differences. If you end up running a component however get some double sided tape and leave the wire long. move it around until your happy and then mount it.
I've been running tweeter in the kick in this car and it's done very well at every event it's attended so far. stage height is just above the dash... 3-4" width is good and minimal time alignment is being used.
