Ok i'm looking to paint my engine cover, (and i went to Kragen Auto and i saw some engine spray paint but i wasn't to sure about it) and I've looked around SL for awhile now, and i don't see any stright forward Forum on this so if anyone could help me get started please don't hesitate to post, also if you find a link to anything please help...

I was wondering what all of you fellow Scion owners used to paint your engine covers? Such as brand of the paint, and where you bought it, and how much?
Also if it was/is durable, such as any problem or set-back that it cause? (If any)

I second his statement. I've spent all morning on here and can't find anything on a brand or specific type. I don't wanna paint it and then two days later the paint chip off or crack under the heat of the engine bay.

 

the plastic cover is a little bit flexible so some people recommend a "flexible" paint I forget what it's called.

Personally i've used Duplicolor Metalcast and it worked out great. Any of the high heat engine paints should be fine. Duplicolor makes a bunch of different colors. Just make sure to follow the general painting steps (sand, primer, sand, primer, sand, paint, etc...) and you should be fine. If you want to make sure the paint sticks to the plastic well, either rough it up with sandpaper or you can use adhesion promoter.

 

Or you could get the Krylon plastic paint. It's kinda meant to get hot since it can be used outside on lawn furniture. I just painted my engine cover on my lunch hour with that paint and it looks great. Plus there's no prep for that stuff. Since it's going on a plastic surface you just point and shoot, but make sure to do light coats, and yes it will take about 15 coats.

 

i got mine powdercoated BSP and it looks great.

 

How do you powdercoat something thats plastic?!

As far as durability
I have the Duplicolor Metalcast in purple on my Matrix engine cover, it's been 2 years and seen 2 salty NY winters and still looks great

 

For anyone looking to keep their engine cover immaculate.
Buy a 2nd cover, and keep the nicely painted covered off the car unless at shows/meets lol.

well, i didnt powdercoat it myself. i took it someone to get powdercoated. he painted it BSP. I will post a pic when i get home.

 

ok, well there is a HUGE different between powdercoating and painting. FYI anything that is plastic cannot be powdercoated.

I'm using a combination of both for my calipers.

You just need to take your time with painting to make sure it doesn't bubble/crack. prep well, sand good, wait between coats, and don't be impatient. now if only I could take my own advice, LOL.

Also if you want the lettering, after you paint the cover in a different color. Ycart has vinyl stickers.

^^You can also use that vinyl for a mask...Paint the lettering, let it dry, put the vinyl on, paint over it all, take off the vinyl, clear it

 

Where do you get the clear coat from?
